Third-Year Public Policy & Business Administration Double Major, Ahiliya Nat, interns with Franklin Templeton in Bombay, India!

We caught up with Ahiliya Nat 3rd year double major in Public Policy and Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. She shares her summer internship experience with us.

"This summer I'm interning at Franklin Templeton Investments in Bombay, India.

My job is to look at over 20 of Franklin Tempelton's national distributors. My primary role is to look at how our pricing, structure, coverage, training, and non-monetary compensations affect our market share of each national distributor's industry market share. My other job is to look at specifically 10 of those 20 national distributors and map their branches with our branches (based on each branch's assets under management) to see where we can put in more focus and coverage to increase our market share in certain branches or areas Pan India.

The School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech prepared me for this by teaching me how to think out of the box. All of our classes in the School of Public Policy are more free-thinking and open-ended; there is no one right answer. When there is a problem I have to solve at work, I know the process to find a solution because all of our projects in the School are based on solving real-world problems, be it related to business, immigration, healthcare, etc.

Also, the School taught me how to work well in a team, with people of all ages, as the main part of every class and our grade is the projects that we do. Now, I can work with my fellow interns, managers, and VPs and display a professional and confident demeanor."

The team was rewarded for their “Liberating a Dammed & Culverted Georgia” project that addresses the best practices and regulations on dam and culvert removal. The goal of the project is to prevent water contamination, damage to aquatic wildlife, and improve aquatic connectivity in the state of Georgia. “Georgia is home to thousands of dams and culverts. These structures present a growing concern about the disruption to waterways. These structures lead to water contamination, damage aquatic wildlife, and suppress the growth of various species and can threaten community safety when they fail. This study has conducted research concerning dam and culvert removal and have produced a six-state comparison, dam removal case study, and regulation database. This study has identified the best practices, permitting processes, and regulations surrounding dam and culvert removal in the state of Georgia through these deliverables. The results of the study will ultimately provide The Nature Conservancy with the best practices and regulatory understanding needed to begin working toward dam removal and culvert restoration, with the goal of improving aquatic connectivity in Georgia.” CHECK out more.

Leslie Ross, an Academic Program Manager in the School of Public Policy, recently received Georgia Tech’s Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor award. The recognition of her achievements has now been extended to the largest possible audience: the “Global Community for Academic Advising” (NACADA) has announced that Ms. Ross hasbeen selected as a 2018 Outstanding Advising Award Winner in the Primary Advising category. Shewill be honored at the special Awards Ceremony and Reception being held at the annual NACADA Conference in Phoenix, AZ this fall.

As her letter of nomination stated, “Her innovative zeal has transformed the School of Public Policy’s undergraduate program, enriched the lives of all of the students in our major, and increased the recognition of Georgia Tech as the home of a unique, rigorous, and successful public policy program. She has performed far beyond standard expectations with a blend of professional seriousness and smiling warmth that has greatly enhanced the learning environment for both students and professors.” Ms. Ross is richly deserving of this national award.
