A cabin in the woods. by jannikobenhoff on Instagram
Geraldine, you absolute doll, you! I have a question, if you wouldn't mind? if I've written a fic that's about 13k ish words, would you recommend posting it in multiple chapters or as one chapter? I wrote it all in one block but I've already divided it into chapters in case I wanted to do that and Im having trouble deciding. (also I'm super excited for your A Priori livestream!!! i wont have internet to watch bc ill been a cabin somewhere lol but i hope it goes super well for everyone :D :D :D
Geraldine!!! my dear!!!! I’m so sorry this took so long to respond to, I’ve been criminally short of time. literally, I’ve been so busy robbing banks, it’s kept my schedule quite chock-full.
I don’t know whether you’ve taken the plunge already with your fic and decided what you want to do with it, but I can offer general advice for the future, either way?
the benefits of posting as a whole are as follows: your work is complete, so it will likely get more immediate attention - as a reader, I trust a finished fic to be completed! no abandoned works here! the cons, though, are that the fic sinks further down the AO3 update list quickly, which means it’s less likely the browsing reader will come across it and click.
the pros and cons of posting serially are pretty much the same, but reversed. you get less immediate attention, perhaps - but continually updating the fic pushes it back up to the top on AO3, and so encourages more hits :o
both sets of problems are possible to remedy!! in the first instance, with posting as a whole, you can promo your work where you can - on your blog, submitting to fic recs, etc. (for readers, by the way, this is one of the reasons why it’s super lovely to send asks on tumblr to your fave fic’s author - then they have the opportunity to publish the ask and talk about their fic publicly if they want to, which might catch people’s interest - and those people might go and read the fic!! like, the main reason it’s lovely is because OMG U LIKED!! THE FIC OMG AHSDUASD HEART MELTING BREATH STOPPED EXHILARATION MAXIMUM, but that is another reason hahaha.) also, you can keep uploading other works to your AO3, and the readers of those fics might click on your name and check out what else you’ve written.
in the second instance, with the serial posting, the solution is pretty much - patience, so far as I can see!! the hits will come. you just have to wait for them.
I know a lot of people who swear by serial posting and also a lot who like to upload as a whole. for myself, I’ve always uploaded as a whole whenever I have the full fic written, and only done serial posting so far during the projects that are ongoing - it’s just a personal preference thing. however you decide to do it, just make sure it’s what feels right for you!! what makes you happy. that’s the most important thing :D
I wish to live in a rural place.
