What a great question, Ethel. I’d still watch, but would care for them differently. We all have our media redlines and I think that would be mine.

However, Half Man would be a much different story if they had been blood siblings. Especially difficult if they shared both parents. The intoxicating aspect of their relationship would have much darker undertones. And that’s saying something given how dark they are already.

I think Ruben’s love for Niall, and the part of him he wants to keep, is Niall’s innocence. Sure Niall isn’t as pure as the driven snow but he is to Ruben. He makes it so that Niall is never apart from him until he leaves for university. Make them blood siblings and that innocence is not as captivating or novel. It instead becomes a heavy responsibility where Ruben is trying to keep Niall safe. To stop his father from doing to Niall what he’s done to Ruben. I think this would break him.

We’ve compared Half Man to Wuthering Heights a lot here. Like in that story, the action only works by the fact that Heathcliffe and Cathy have been raised as siblings, but aren’t blood relatives.

In the media I’ve seen, only one show pull off a storyline with this matter well, and it’s not Game of Thrones. It’s one of the episodes in the first series of Call The Midwife.

Do you know of any fairytales like Old Rinkrank where the heroine/princess is explicitly an older woman who gets the traditional happily-ever-after, marriage and everything?

I know there are stories where the heroine ages and has children, but in those stories the heroine gets married as a young maiden; I'm specifically looking for stories where she gets married as an older woman.

Out of the bat, just like this, know I can't think of any... I will need to check into whatever notes I can find about this tale.

Unless you count "The Flayed Old Woman" from the Pentamerone where, on a technical level, an old woman gets a happy ever after wedding - but not before a fairy-lifting. But I don't think this is what you are looking for X)
