The splash illustration for my short comic in the kickstarter anthology “A Howl” which was made by all indigenous creators.

I was asked to just make a fantasy story about my wolf characters, so I made it about Kayda, one of the first beast people-- an important historical figure in my stories. The story follows her as she tries to collect the spirit crystals of her friends who had died in battle, but is confronted by an elven priest looking for a favor.

She sleeps amongst the rot, in a ring of toadstools. The moon, her guardian, tucking her in with a blanket of chills. Beneath her the earthworms gnaw away, their tiny feasts stirring her from her dreamless peace. She knows no other home, not with the butterflies nor songbirds— not with the bees or the rosebuds. No, she is only welcomed by moths and by toads and maybe even the corpses buried deep below; although this is what she knows, she finds her resentment beginning to grow. She may have been birthed by the fallen trees and the termites they feed, but one of them she shall never be.
