Unwritten Pistols Interview 1/16/17
On the 16th of January, I had the admiring privilege to interview the band “Unwritten Pistols” coming our way from Rancho Cucamonga, California. The band itself currently has two members, Curtis, who is the band’s bassist, and Zoe, who is the band’s guitarist and lead singer as well. The two band members are currently openly looking for a new drummer to maintain and keep the band’s complexity going.
When asked the meaning behind the band name “Unwritten Pistols”, lead singer and guitarist Zoe admitted “It’s kind of funky cause I got it like two years ago off of “band name generator” so I mean it doesn’t really have a meaning, I mean it’s just kind of like a funky name.” The two members agreed that it was a name they both liked so it kind of just “stuck around”.
The next question I had for the boys was about what their motive was with wanting to make music and present it to the world. Zoe answered that he formed “Unwritten Pistols” about two years ago. “It’s really because i’ve been wanting to play music for my whole life but I wanted to find something independent I could do, not just like.. you know playing in someone else’s band or playing in some college ensemble. I wanted to create something I could control myself.” Unwritten Pistol’s bassist, Curtis chimed in with his reason being “I’ve always been involved with music.” Curtis explained how he actually got asked to be the bassist of Unwritten Pistols by the band’s old drummer. Zoe and Curtis have both been musically involved their entire lives... why not expand on it?
I asked the two of them who normally writes the band’s songs, and to also elaborate on the entire “writing process”. Come to find out, it’s the lead singer, Zoe, who writes all of the band’s lyrics and most of the riffs. He admitted that once in a while the bassist, Curtis, will write his own riff or two. Zoe tells me that the song making process, for him at least, depended on the sound of the riffs first. “Based off the mood the riff is giving off, we can write the lyrics off top!”
After listening to the band’s demos which could be found on spotify/itunes/bandcamp under “Unwritten Pistols”, I recognized a bit of grunge and metal punk mixed together. I asked the band who they would consider to be some musical influences so I could get more of a grasp on how they preferred people to interpret their music. When asked, the both agreed that their musical influences for the band are all based off of late 80′s / early 90′s Seattle grunge. “So bands like TAD, Soundgarden, Nirvana, L7, Melvins, Mudhoney and many more. Focusing on this genre actually makes us one of the only grunge bands in the I.E. .”
The last question I had for the band was their goals and aspirations of starting this, and to also tell me what fans could be expecting from them. “Our goals are to simply get out there more, share our music with others, hopefully get people thinking about true grunge again, and just to give respect to the scene and give fans and friends the best we have to offer.” Zoe, the band’s singer and guitarist shares. The band has announced that they will be recording a brand new E.P. in late February so keep your eyes out for that!
Zoe and Curtis were overall really cool, genuine people who really only have good intentions with their music. Make sure to check them out!!!

Surf Goth Gods
In music the genre “surf goth” doesn’t get put out there too wildly. In spite of that, the band Beach Bums from Covina, California have used the “surf goth” genre as just one type of music style to categorize themselves as.
When asking the band members Jon(lead singer/ guitarist), Kunu (drums) and Mark (Bassist) what the “Beach Bum sound” was Jon answered with “ we really don't know, we kind of all together create a very diverse type sound- and would rather not limit themselves to one specific genre when they can do it all. After mentioning their song “ BUTTA$KOTCH” and how much admiration we had for it, lead singer Jon mentioned that on the band's next album listeners will hear a lot of hip hop, a lot of R&B and a lot of “chill shit”.
“The first album was just really heavy we were all teenagers and shit we were all into punk”.
Lead singer Jon and drummer Kunu informed us that they have known each other since 7th grade! “Him and I have been playing since we were in metal bands and stuff, we were little kids…I hit him up one day and was like “Aye I need a drummer.” and he was like “I’m down.” (Jon on his and Kunu’s friendship)
Bassist Mark was originally in a separate band before being in Beach Bums. However, the band he was in broke up and Beach Bums needed a bassist.
“ We were gonna get a new bassist but he (Kunu) was like “Marks down” and Mark played and it was a click.” Jon tells us about Mark - the bands’ bassist first joining the beach bums.” The first practice he had it, we just had that feeling.” (Jon on Mark)
A big music inspiration to the band is Rage Against the Machine. “He picks a lot of elements in music like me. Like metal, and then like funk, blues and the with the vocals to rapping and then the heavy guitar. It’s all of that kind of embedded to my style but with my soul into it, you know? I put my funk, my groove into it.” (Mark on Rage Against the Machine)
Mark: We all love hip hop and rap
Jon: We all love metal too. We used to be really heavy music before this, we really softened up honestly.
Despite that; Kunu the bands’ drummer said he gets his inspiration from the earth.
“Whatever I hear, whatever I take in, my experiences, walking home I just hear shit and I don’t know, it inspires me.”
The Beach Bums are an extremely talented band that not only has a variety og sounds to their music but they’re all are authentic people with remarkably genuine hearts.
