“So what’s it like to be a death eater?” You ask, a bright smile on your face even though it’s way too early in the morning to be this happy, well at least for Draco.
“Y/N, we are in surrounded by other students can you be quieter please.” He hushed you, motioning with his hands like as he pushed his hands down in the air your inner volume would be supressed.
“Sorry, I’m just nosey.” You replied only a tad quieter than before.
“Yeah that personality trait has been very clearly established.” He jokingly glared at you but couldn’t hold it, which was weird since his facial expressions towards people were usually very dreary and mean but when he saw you smiling, like being nosey was a compliment, he couldn’t help but let his façade break.
“Also it’s not the most cheery of topics to start our morning.” He added.
Before you could respond a familiar trio made their way over to you. “Morning Y/n, is Malfoy bothering you?” Ron spoke with a spite filled tone. Their relationship was weird, you were friends with both now , well you assumed Draco considered you a friend. Neither was really in the wrong, it was all based on the way they were raised and the path that was laid before them in Hogwarts You knew Draco was mostly in the wrong from the way he has acted and treated people but you believed he was more than that, it was a defence mechanism.
“Not at all, we are just chatting.” You stated like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“Malfoy? Chatting? I didn’t know he could hold a civilized conversation.” Ron continued as Hermione and Harry watched with proud smiles on their faces from their friends words.
“You think I’m uncivilized? Have you seen yourself or your family for that matter, my family is the epitome of wizard class and you think I can’t hold a conversation?” Draco spat back defensively.
“Maybe he was questioning if you could have a conversation without being rude.” Hermione countered.
“It depends on who I’m talking to.” Draco said as he walked through the group leaving you there with the confused trio.
“So, you and Draco and friends now?” Harry asked, no judgment in his tone but a bit of confusion.
“Can you think of anyone in the school she’s not friends with or at least friendly towards?” Hermione said, in her usual tone like she knew the answer to her own question.
“No, I can’t really think of any, I would say Filtch but there was that one time he caught us up late and she got us out of trouble with him, she could probably befriend a death eater or even Voldemort if she tried.” Ron said nodding his head after he spoke as if he was agreeing with his own words.
“Ha, well maybe my friendliness doesn’t extend that far.” You awkwardly laughed and made your way to the Hufflepuff table.
You noticed Draco sitting across the great hall and tried to make eye contact with him and smile, but he wore a frown as he stared at nothing, deep in thought.
When you were done eating you meant to go talk to Draco but he was already gone, if he wasn’t in a good mood you hoped he would seek comfort from you, but he would probably shut himself away.
Draco wasn’t used to having a friend he could talk to and seek help from so when he got upset over the very obvious opinion people had about the two of you he closed himself off. Draco went to class and avoided everywhere you would be. He was doing good until the two of you had Potions together again.
You walked into the room and noticed the empty seat beside Draco, you smiled brightly and made your way to the seat.
“Good afternoon.” You hummed as you organized your books on the desk.
“Hi.” He replied not looking at you.
“Draco? You have avoided me all day and now you seem so… blue. Are you okay? If I’m being too suffocating I can back off.” You said, your worries becoming known.
“No, I like having you around, I just don’t like the judgment.” He simply stated, not looking at you.
“Well I don’t care what people think, and you shouldn’t either.” You said placing your hand over his and rubbing circles into his skin, a small gesture but it made his heart race and he wasn’t sure why. His cheeks heated up from your words and the action but before he could reply you were interrupted.
“It was bad enough you being friends with the Hufflepuff but now you guys are what? Holding hands. Draco you could do so much better.” Pansy said loudly drawing the attention of the others.
You pulled your hand and retracted into yourself, making yourself seem smaller. You could feel yourself developing a crush on Draco and felt ashamed since you knew he only wanted a friend.
You began to over analyzing every action, was it so obvious that you had feelings for him or was Pansy just being overly jealous and spiteful like usual.
“Oh fuck off Pansy, you’re just jealous like always. It’s not such a crazy notion that I would want to have a friend.” Draco’s bad mood became evident again as he spoke.
“Me? Jealous? You wish Draco. Also you do have friends, I don’t know why you would need more, especially her. Well, being friends I can kind of see, but there’s rumours that you two are actually dating, unbelievable if you ask me!” Pansy spoke like she was wounded at first but quickly gained her sharp tone back to make her words hurt as much as possible.
“Why is the idea of us dating so unbelievable? Just because I wouldn’t date you doesn’t mean I wouldn’t date anyone. I’d be lucky if Y/n even considered dating me, I’m lucky enough she wants to be my friend.” Draco knew everyone was listening and exactly how to embarrass Pansy with his words but he also was trying to defend you which wasn’t a normal thing for Draco since he usually just aimed to hurt people with his words.
She huffed and turned to walk back to her seat as the professor walked in. Everyone was giggling and whispering about Pansy, then they would look over to you and Draco and whisper some more, you didn’t mind at all as your mind was preoccupied by the fact that he intertwined his fingers with yours under the table.
Maybe it was just a reassuring gesture, or maybe it was him silently hinting at something more as he looked straight ahead at the professor, not daring to look at your reaction.
You sat through the entire class with your hands intertwined under the table, both of you too scared to pull away or look at each other. You had never looked so attentive in a class but your mind was busy racing with thoughts about Draco and not retaining a single thing the professor said.
When class ended you both pulled your hands away to grab your books and walked silently out of the class room, it was your last class of the day. A nice thought but now you had no idea where to go or what to do, at least if u had somewhere to be you would know where to go but you both awkwardly stood there, just waiting for the other to talk first.
“Do you want to go sit outside?” Draco asked as he looked out the window seeing the bright shining sun.
“Sure, I’d love to sit outside on some dirt with you.” You joked
“We can sit on a bench you idiot.” He laughed and nudged your should with his as you walked towards the doors.
“There are no benches by the lake though.” You said looking to him.
“I take it that means you want to sit by the lake then.?” Draco smiled as he spoke.
“Yes.” You said as you nodded.
“Well I would love to sit in the dirt by the lake with you then.” He said as you made your way to the lake and found a spot of grass that wasn’t to damp or dirty, a perfect spot under a tree with a bit of shade, a lot of warm sunlight and a thick patch of grass.
You threw your books down and took a seat resting your head against the trunk enjoying the warm sun on your face, you closed your eyes from the light.
Draco sat down next to you and just admired you for a second, your eyes slightly fluttering and the smile that covered your face, how did he get so lucky he thought.
Out of everyone in the school you happened to catch him during his darkest time, that was currently still going on even though he didn’t feel it when you were around. And instead of judgment you gave him hope and friendship and another feeling he couldn’t quite loose, he felt himself catching feelings for you.
After today’s class he hoped they were reciprocated, you didn’t pull your hand away at all. Maybe it was more friendly but he had to know if you felt the same. The problem is that Draco is scared if he tells you that you will get scared off and run away if you don’t feel the same and he will have ruined the only real friendship he’s ever had.
Maybe he should just be bold and kiss you, your lips that looked even more pink in the sunlight, they almost sparkled from the glistening cherry chapstick you wore, he wondered if he would taste it.
You opened your eyes to see Draco sat beside you staring at you, his face was growing redder by the second.
“Are you getting sunburnt already?” You asked as you lifted your hand up to his cheek feeling his warm skin underneath.
Draco’s eyes widened, he was blushing over the thought of simply kissing you. He felt so embarrassed he wouldn’t admit that to you though.
“Oh, uh yes I burn easily.” He spoke timidly, like he wasn’t even sure if that was true.
You moved over to the shaded spot and pulled him by his arm over to you, he was sat on his knees so he clumsily let you pull him, moving his knees getting as close as you would bring him.
He sat so close to you now, you looked into his eyes for a second and he looked right back into yours, he was thinking about something but before you could ask his eyes moved to look at your lips.
Your breath caught in your throat and before you knew it his lips were placed on yours. He misjudged the distance a bit and pushed your back against the tree, his one knee making its way between yours as you placed your hands back on his cheeks holding his face and keeping him close, the kiss was passionate but not too heated.
Draco pulled away before any tongue could be involved. He stayed a few inches from your face examining the smile on your lips, the lips he just kissed, and the brightness in your eyes and your hands that were still placed on his cheeks.
He felt a weight lifted of his shoulder as he realized, you wanted that kiss just as much as he did.
