despite the hardship in his life from a young age, anthony was always the dreamy sort. it was difficult for him to stop looking for better. this was much to the relief of his elder siblings who saw the world as how it really was.
always dreaming of what's out there, his sister marched him down to the docks one day and found him a position on a ship. this would provide extra income for their family and one less mouth to feed. anthony was grateful for the chance to see the world. he adored everything about the bountiful. the hard work, the new breeze, the salty ocean---traveling was made for him.
his father was rarely around, but anthony holds the memories of their few conversations dear to his heart. the one he remembers most was when his father spoke of london, a great city far away.
anthony's father left their family shortly after his younger brother was born. this caused a huge strain on his mother. the lack of his income was devastating. as a family with nine children, they were never well-off as it was.
this is when the realities of the world began to get to him. however, he remained hopeful. he rose through the ranks and earned himself the title of sailor. he was respected on board and back home.
anthony was, however, known for sneaking little things on board because "they needed help." mice he found, the ship's cat, a butterfly. everyone teased him about it. however, they truly saw the good of anthony hope when he rescued a man on a raft in the water. he took upon himself more duties instead of the man having to earn his keep.
sweeney todd intrigued him. he wanted to grow closer to the man and learn his backstory, but quickly promised not to ask any questions. instead, they got to know each other through anthony's ramblings and mr. todd's few words.
he had been fatherless for much of his life. it wasn't difficult to find a father figure in mr. todd.
he kept his promise and only asked one question to mr. todd. that was on the docks of london. anthony wanted to see his friend again.
