PORTRAYAL. i take inspiration from sondheim, the 2007 film, the christopher bond play but most of all: my own headcanons. most of my portrayals will be based off of my own ideas and are linked back to my portayal of johanna. i've set canon to take place a year later than what is described in the play/movie. sweeney arrives in london in 1847 and the final sequence happens in early 1848. this is to align with my canon for johanna. if you ever have any questions, i am always happy to answer them!

SELECTIVTY. i am a highly selective blog. this is due to the dark nature of canon. i also do not tolerate favoritism towards my male muses over my female muses. i expect this blog will be highly friends-only. this isn't because i'm unfriendly! i just know i can trust my friends/former mutuals with these dark subjects and to communicate with me. i will operate this blog at low activity. non-roleplay blogs are not welcome here and will be hard-blocked on sight. i will not interact with muses from steven universe, the book of mormon musical, southpark, or anime.

NSFW/SHIPPING. as much as i love shipping, i do not expect this to be a very ship-heavy blog. i prefer canon relationships. thus, most muses are not open for shipping. i refuse to write sweeney/benjamin in a romantic relationship with lovett. i am of the opinion that he isn't open to any sort of romantic or sexual relationship if it isn't with lucy. lovett will be portrayed as obsessive/possessive towards benjamin/sweeney. i find their dynamic fascinating and would love to explore them in other ways but writing them in a mutually-romantic way makes me deeply uncomfortable. relationships i consider canon are: benjamin/sweeney and lucy, lovett and mr. lovett, anthony and johanna, etc. i'm a huge fan of all sorts of other dynamics! enemies, friendship, etc. nsfw content may be discussed lightly on the dash, but tagged as "suggestive tw" and may appear in ooc conversation, but i will be keeping it very tame for the sake of my own boundaries.

No matter how hard she wants to believe it, Nell knows they'll never be equal. They might've been, once upon a time, before their features rounded out and men began to take notice of them. Before they became bargaining tokens in a man's world. When did it all change? Nell wants to believe it truly changed when her best friend married Benjamin, the man that was supposed to be hers. She wants to believe that Lucy's simple misstep, the little grievance her friend enacted against her is where the divide between them began. But a part of her knows its always been this way. Nell has always felt inferior around Lucy. She had always been the darkness to her light, the shadow to her sunbeams. It's only now that she's found herself reaping the consequences of such shortcomings.

"It's not the same." Her bottom lip quivered in indignation. Lucy was right, but Nell was too stuck in her ways, too knee-deep in her own self-loathing to understand how easy it would be to level the playing fields. If she only held her chin up and smiled, perhaps life wouldn't seem so dreary. Perhaps if she pretended life was filled with hope and possibilities, she could convince herself that she was happy.

But she was too angry with herself, with the world that she couldn't bring herself to see past the dark clouds looming overhead. She was too blinded by her angst to see how innocent Lucy was in all of this.

"Those little girls are dead." They weren't girls anymore. They couldn't spend the hours toddling about with porcelain dolls and braiding each other's hair with frilly ribbons. They were women now, wives. They had duties and expectations to live up to, lest they be dragged away to the Bedlam. They were birds kept submissive by lock and key, watching the world from behind gilded bars. They were merely reduced to carcasses, hollowed out and hung to dry until they had nothing left to give, until they were nothing more than gristle and bones and dust.

When we have babies... The phrase sent shivers up her arms and Nell wrapped them around herself to fight off the feeling of dread. She'd never been keen on having children. She knew it was a wife's duty to provide children--sons, if possible-- but being a loyal wife didn't sound as terrible when she imagined herself in love with her husband. Even with Jakob, with whom she didn't truly love, she'd at least resigned herself to contentment with the idea of performing her marital duties. But Elias was different. He was cruel and rough. He was cold and callous. He was not Benjamin, even though she imagined his face every time her husband visited her in the night.

"Things are different for you. You love your husband; I loathe mine. I detest Elias with every inch of my being. I would rather die than bear his children. I'd rather gut myself like a fish than bring his wretched spawn into the world." Her words were gritty and grotesque and she hoped they unnerved Lucy as much as the thought of motherhood unnerved her. Nell let out a huff and crossed her arms over her chest. It was a childish gesture, pouting and puffing out her cheeks as though her sorrow would be enough to change the tides. But Lucy was the only one she felt safe speaking so boldly around. As much as she envied her friend, Nellie couldn't deny that Lucy was the only person she had to confide in.

As a confession rose to the tip of her tongue, Nell lifted her chin and spoke slowly, her tone low and conspiratorial. "I've been having strange dreams, Lucy. More and more frequently lately."

despite the gravity of the conversation, her tone is still light. brightness is all lucy understands. never a girl in the shadows, even in london. ❝ you're not dead. we've just grown up, that's all. ❞ adulthood is much different from childhood but it is in this age that she found love and where she'll grow her family. isn't that a blessing?

❝ you detest him? ❞ it's as though nellie threw her rolling pin into lucy's chest. her fairytale perception of the future is melting away. as soon as she'd seen nellie again, she had greeted her old friend with open arms. what a dream! both of them happily married, raising their children to be friends with each other. and who knows! perhaps, lucy would have a boy and nellie would have a girl and their children would fall in love with each other.

but even lucy knows this isn't a perfect world, despite her optimisms. there is a judge lurking for her. and a cruel husband for nellie. it does make her sad, in a way. lucy always assumed they had the same dreams. but here they are: as different as can be. but difference doesn't have to get in the way of friendship.

"What do I want?" Everything, she wanted to shout. Everything she could never have. She wanted to scream and cry until her throat bled and gnaw and gnash at any living thing until her bloodlust was satiated. She was a wild dog locked in a kennel, desperate to claw her way out of this life she was trapped in.

And all the while, Lucy sat perched on the window sill like a silky kitten ready to be pampered.

She wanted to shake some sense into Lucy. Couldn't she see? Why couldn't she understand that all Nell had ever wanted was to be just like her? To be pretty and eloquent, delicate as a flower and as alluring as one, too. But Lucy was a rose, aromatic and beautiful, and Nell was deadly nightshade. She wanted Lucy's face, her husband, her life.

And all she got was pity from her friend. Or at least that's what it felt like from Nellie's perspective.

She tried to copy Lucy. Tried to mimic her mannerisms, echo her melodic laugh, and mirror her delicate smile. But no matter how hard she tried, Nell always came up short. She would perpetually live in Lucy's shadow unless she did something about it.

"What does it matter what I want? Expectations only lead to disappointment, Luce, and I've had enough of that for one lifetime. We'll never be equals, you and I."

she cannot understand it. in the days of carefree girlhood, they were friends. they found worms crawling up from the dirt together. they snuck around corners to fantasize together. they played princesses and fairies. everything was together.

they're supposed to be together again. aren't they? by marrying benjamin, they have been reunited. they are supposed to be bosom friends, grasp each other's fingers out of excitement and squeal at good news together. nellie was supposed to be in her wedding. girlhood isn't so far away now. why does so much have to change as women?

❝ but we are equals, nellie, ❞ lucy says. ❝ we're neighbors. ❞ where is the girl from petticoat lane? where the other girl with the dark hair and the striking eyes? where are their dolls? ❝ we're just grown up, nell. i've got a husband. so do you. perhaps, we can't play the same way we did when we were girls, but we can play again. ❞

pale, perfect hand stretches out to touch her old friend's. a smile. an attempt to brighten the darkness. when her mother passed away, that was the role lucy played. she can do it again for a playmate, can't she?

❝ we can have tea together. not just tea parties that we played as girls. ❞ a light giggle. ❝ an actual tea party. we can go to the park together. one day, when we have babies, they'll play together. ❞ and she and benjamin have been trying. ( why is her womb still barren? ) ❝ those little girls and little boys will carry on our legacy. ❞ isn't that just perfect?

are they save in this home? are they safe in hawkins? the latter... well, lucy isn't so sure of. whatever her plan was when she was a young woman, it certainty wasn't this. maybe the moving to america part but was it to stay in a dead-end town? was it to work for a man conducting on experiences on children and worse? was it to loose everything ( she thinks ) she's ever known? no. none of it. but holding elle now, brushing the hair out from her eyes, it has all been worth it. lucy holds the girl as if she is her own daughter ( and to her, eleven is. ) presses a kiss to the side of her head. mother comforting child after a nightmare.

❝ yeah, honey. ❞ mother's job is to protect. it is not to be unsure of herself or insecure. they should be safe here, anyway. with brenner... gone. lucy weaves her fingers through elle's hair. ❝ nobody knows where we are. everything bad is gone. ❞ she hopes. lucy cannot remember if she was a religious woman before, but she prays now: let my girl be safe. ❝ you wanna talk about your dream? ❞

"Oh, please. I bet you're just tryin' to butter me up so I give you a free drink. Is that is?" Resting her hands on her hips, she smirked. He was sweet, she thought. A genuinely good man in this cesspit of a city they called London. It should've been comforting, but his easy smile and friendly demeanor only put Nell on edge, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. "Tell you what: I'll give you another dram of ale, and you tell me a good ol' story about your adventures on the sea."

He'd been told time and time before that he'd end up in jail. He believed it himself at one point, but Johanna had changed that. If he was in jail, he couldn't be with her.

And...if he was in jail, he was was certain she'd leave him. Not that that could be helped. A fight found him wherever he went. He was loud and vicious, and a manner of all other things that he knew, were already stamped and labeled upon him in the same manner a letter made its way through the postal system. Fragility hardly mattered, it could be tossed, throttled, and all together lost, but it made its way the same as all the others regardless of care.

The lack of care was his most consistent teacher.

This, however, was a downright stupid reason to be incarcerated. Was it the most stupid? No. but it easily cleared the top ten.

That was why seeing her was so important. He'd been so proud of her, breaking rules and doing something as daring as this. Oh, he was probably going to be stuck here a lot longer if she got caught , but, man, he couldn't be happier to see her and her giddy face.

She was smiling. She laughed.

And she was now there, and he was now here.

Shit.

That didn't stop him from running his mouth like he always did, perhaps the loud overabundance of articulation could cover up his own anxieties.

"Uh--" he said with a smirk, he was in higher spirits after all that. "Well, she's a good woman. Don't know how she packs it all in there." He said sitting down on his bunk, " An' that melon soakin' up a lot a it, huh?" He didn't think Ben would ever be interested in anything, ever. "Jo, yeah. Johanna's too much, just Jo." Riff scrunched his face as if the answer wasn't already obvious, " McClellan. " he said it with such confidence (she was the only thing he could be confident about). "But she was... She ain't talked much about before. But she ain't one a what's his face... Barker. But she gets funny about that. I think anyway. Family's fuckin' hard, huh?"

she's a good woman... and he begins to imagine her mother. that must be what she looks like now. the same yellow hair that reminded him on fields of wheat. the same creamy skin. bright eyes... they were green. that's the color they turned once she was a few months older. green, just like his lucy.

❝ barker? ❞ his voice echoes. he can hear his wife within the name. he can hear the man he used to be at her side. johanna barker. the curly-haired infant he was taken away from all those years ago. they had been in the park, pointing out the playground equipment to the baby as if she understood she would get to play with it once she was older. he remembers picking out her name with lucy. all the options ( should they name a girl after her mother? his mother? what about middle names? ) they went through. but johanna... johanna was right.

and now, johanna seems to be grown up. with a husband and a baby on the way. isn't she just a little girl herself?

when he looks at riff now, he isn't sure if he should hate him or not. some fatherly urge that he's never known pricks at his skin. this boy, in his same cell, left benjamin's daughter and the baby she's growing. ( his girl is having a baby. )

when he looks at riff, he wonders if he connects the dots. benjamin barker. johanna barker. father and daughter.

❝ what... what happened to her father? ❞ he's almost unable to hear himself. who is she with now? why isn't riff at home with her? benjamin's feet have planted themselves against the concrete. ready to jump into whatever battle he's supposed to take on. this wasn't what he imagined for their girl. she was supposed to turn eighteen, graduate from high school, go onto uni... get the full education that benjamin wasn't able to. get the full education lucy wasn't able to. things have changed since he was thrown in here.

he feels his brows sinking into something of disapproval. ❝ family's a good thing. ❞ why aren't you with yours now? ❝ a beautiful thing. ❞ benjamin has just been ripped away from his. ❝ why're you here, son? ❞ son. and the boy doesn't even know the deeper meaning of it. he married benjamin's daughter. ❝ why aren't you with your johanna? ❞

the boy swings in and out. one evening he's here, the next benjamin returns back to their cell to learn he was escorted out hours prior. it doesn't bother him, for the most part. benjamin can do without the early mornings waking up to hearing the boy being returned behind their shared bars. but at the same time, he's become accustomed to it. benjamin doesn't talk much. in the early days of his sentence, he would too afraid to. now, he can't muster enough care to make any new friends. benjamin clings to himself. though, it doesn't mean he doesn't listen. the kid's some sort of teen parent who keeps getting himself locked up. not that benjamin can blame him. if he was in the same boat as him with lucy, he would be doing anything to provide for his family. this kid is married to that girl ( no baby yet ).

and there's something else... they're living with a family member? the girl's parents? benjamin can't remember.

the girl came today. that's what else he knows. the boy---riff---hasn't stopped talking about it since. they can't be more than eighteen years old. ( johanna is eighteen now. ) stuck in indiana. ( is johanna still here? ) with some older relative that clearly hates riff. ( where is johanna? )

what does riff keep calling her? ( did he hear johanna? )

❝ sounds like you really miss this girl, ❞ benjamin says, possibly interrupting the boy though it wasn't his intention. he stares at him. benjamin's daughter is his age now. they're from the same deadbeat town. ❝ you say her name was johanna? ❞ ( it can't be. ) ❝ johanna what? ❞

there is something like home. for the past decade ( and then some ), lucy would come back to four cold walls. no pictures hanging on the walls. no one waiting for her. she would stare at those walls until she passed out on the sofa. there was no one in lucy averley's life. no one except for eleven. she could at least dream knowing that the little girl with the big brown eyes was waiting for her to come early the next morning. but now, when lucy comes home, eleven is waiting for her.

purse discarded to the side. bouquets of flowers spilling from her grasp. a wide smile. is this what it's like for mothers to come home to their daughters? ( is this what life had in store for her before? )

❝ oh! thank you, eleven. ❞ lucy grins at the offered blossom. she takes it, leaning in closer to the girl. ❝ do you remember what this one is called? let's see... it's purple, it has a yellow center... ❞ all day at the florist shop, lucy looks at the faces of customers she wonders if she used to know. all day, she spends wondering if they recognize her and her stomach twists with worry that eleven won't be there when she comes home. being able to smell her hand soap and see her bright face... she is home. they are home.

❝ i've brought home some new flowers today. would you like to see? ❞

the boy across from him knows his daughter more than he does. that has been clear from the beginning. the way benjamin's daughter looks at him, how she talks, how she laughs. he has seen it from a distance. she has kept the boy from benjamin for longer than he thought she would. it is only when they've been caught that she admitted to him being in her life.

not shame, though. it was not shame that hid him from him. benjamin can tell that much. but he still looks at the boy and wonders. this? his daughter could have any boy in the world if she wanted and she's chosen him?

fingers spread out amidst the flowers. he knows by now how johanna doesn't like them, but well, anthony likes how the wildflowers blossom against the hill. it's a beautiful, little escape between shifts at the lighthouse. from here, he can see home and imagine what his wife is doing down there. is she reading? sewing? today the sun shines down on them, allowing anthony to bask his face in it. summer is right around the corner. days like this remind him of it.

❝ hey riff? ❞ it's hard to imagine his best friend not at his side. practically anytime outside of work, if anthony calls, riff will answer. his wife likened them to birds playing call-and-response with each other. ❝ how're you and johanna getting on? ❞ from what she's told them, it's been... not exactly well. not yet.
