Against All Logic - 2017 - 2019; [Other People]. A.A.L.: LA VISIONE TECNO-LOGICA. Contro ogni logica. Voto: 8. Al link, il brano "Fantasy": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gagW4QNcC4

Rave on U lives by its name; a progressive evolving take on dance music that falls slightly outside the norm. It starts routinely enough with a fairly traditional take on the genre, before sounds and composition go from a minor to major key and then drift into the completely discordant.
Each element of the track takes odd turns into the obscure. Traditional techniques for processing audio in…

AAL - Rave On U
2012-2017, Against All Logic (2018)
As compilations go, they don’t get much better than this. Jaar combines the fundamentals of deep house with dashes of soul, trance and disco. Alongside his pernicious work ethic and attention to detail, he hits a clear formula creating eleven consistently hard-hitting and memorable tracks.
Despite the nature of the tracks as a compilation rather than album, Jaar still treats 2012-2017 to some kind of structure and pacing. The opener is clearly an introduction to what the album’s about, a slow groove punctuated by a deep beat and throes of dark noise. It builds delicately, intelligently layering as much of the album that follows. Virtually every track on 2012-2017 is a lengthy club-esque cut, ranging greatly within their confines of deep house but each still feeling fresh and inspired. Even those that start off to appear similar reveal themselves as distinct tracks – whether it be in their intricacies or the overt flashiness in which they unfold. ‘Hopeless’ and ‘Cityfade’ appear to be similar, before the latter’s rumbling bass kicks in and somehow makes you forget they were ever alike. By the third or so listen, every track is pumped full of incredibly gratifying moments. Even when some of the album seems to lull into predictability, it bounces back with a gorgeous soul sample or newer, dizzying high-hat. ‘Some Kind of Game’ branches into techno, ‘Hopeless’ into trance, ‘Know You’ into funk – by the end, the whole thing feels like a rather momentous exploration of the genre, without ever feeling scattered.
You can, however, see why Jaar doesn’t want the project under his own name. Conceptually it’s a compilation and doesn’t have any of his signature micro-house, textural pacing or subverted political themes. While many of us would kill to see Jaar perform these songs live (as Against All Logic), it is clear why he doesn’t see it in the same league as Space Is Only Noise and Sirens. They’re songs for clubs, with overt layers designed to please crowds. 2012-2017’s greatest pleasure is how it demonstrates Jaar trying something artistically simpler (and being great at it), something you wish more artists would do.
