Her teeth chattered although the day was shockingly hot. His cold tone boldly assaulting her with the question, “Why are you asking me?”
“Why?” she flung back at him, enigmatically.
The force of his attack had squandered his reserves.
“You aren’t answering my question,” he muttered.
Silence grew between them.

I admit it. It was my own experience.
Writing it down made it seem less personal.
But then, I was nagged by the question: Why not write “me” instead of “she”?

“Why are you doing it?” he charged.

“Why do you ask?”
“Why won’t you answer my question?”
“ Are you asking me to justify myself? Or to share the
secret of my being?”
“You think too much.”
“Why do you say that?”
“You ask too many questions!”

Yet, the second variation seemed too true.

My teeth chattered although the day was shockingly hot. The tone itself convulsing your question, “Why?” into an assault, shattering every word my suggestion had naively offered to you.
Unwilling to wage battle, I gave you back one word, “Why.” Flatly intoned.
The “?” was mine.
I felt empowered by the fiction of my own being.
