April 11, 1970  Apollo 13 commander James Lovell during suiting up check procedures in the suiting room of the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The red stripes on the A7L space suit identified him as commander of the mission, making it easier to distinguish him on lunar surface photographs. April 8, 1970, Apollo 13 astronaut John “Jack” Swigert replaced astronaut Thomas Mattingly as Command Module Pilot for the mission. Note there’s no Apollo 13 patch as Swigert is seen here during an A7L spacesuit check a few days before launch. Launchday came 3 days later and Swigert choose to wear his personal Rolex underneath the space suit but the NASA issued Omega Speedmaster chronograph on long velcro strap over the left forearm of the bulky A7L space suit was always clearly visible.
