Maiden Flight the Brabazon by Richard Walker Via Flickr: An image of the Maiden flight of the Bristol Brabazon Prototype Airliner at Filton Airfield Bristol on the 4th Sept 1949 This plane was massive and was one of the largest aircraft ever built (see previous posts for more information) The runway at Filton was greatly extended as it was thought the Brabazon would need a much longer take off, to achieve this a pre-war concrete dual carriageway that took vehicles around this part of North West Bristol was cut in two and the small village of Charlton was relocated and its population moved, as it turned out this massive plane took off in a much shorter distance than had been anticipated, embarrassment all round...
