One of the noteworthy things about The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet (aside from its plot and main cast) is the amount of energy it dedicates to playing around with the staples of space opera works: a particularly good example that comes to my mind is the Aandrisk species; in space opera, reptilian species are often portrayed as hostile, warmongering, anti-social, or just outright mean. However, Becky Chambers writes the Aandrisks as highly cooperative and social; they even have achieved great renown as skilled diplomats and mediators.
