When Katherine first arrived in Mystic Falls in 1864, she claimed to be an orphan from Atlanta who had lost her family in a fire. This lie stemmed from truth. Back in 1492, after discovering the dead bodies of her family, Katerina burned her family home to the ground. Even after they had taken her baby from her and cast her out, Katerina wanted to respect her parents by not leaving their bodies to rot. Her reason for burning down the house was to ensure that she would never be tempted to return to her home and the painful memories it held for if she did, there would be nothing to come back to.

Katherine has never had someone that she has considered to be the love of her life. She has been in love with a few over the years, some of which she will always love, but she has never loved anyone more than she has loved survival. Stefan, Damon and Elijah have all come close to the title and this was shown by Katherine sacrificing her freedom for them individually in the past (getting Stefan to save Damon when they could have killed Klaus and giving the cure to Elijah for example) but there is yet to be someone that Katherine would die for. The day she finds someone she would save over herself is the day she will find the love of her life.
