Clipse – Terminal 5 – August 7, 2025

Rappers Pusha T and Malice teamed up to form Clipse in Virginia Beach, Va., more than 30 years ago. They went on hiatus in 2010 to launch solo careers before the real-life brothers reunited to make music together again in 2019.

A few weeks back, they dropped their fourth album, and first in 16 years, the Pharrell-produced Let God Sort Em Out — “Clipse are still rap’s sharpest duo after all these years,” raves Rolling Stone. And on Thursday night, their first of two NYC appearances this week, they sold out Terminal 5. (Stove God Cooks, who features on the new LP, made a special appearance.)

Put a symbol in my ask for a character that…

☀ - my muse refuses to talk about

((Surprisingly, it’s not Shawn.  Shawn comes close and so does his childhood, but people he refuses to acknowledge are his family on his father’s side.  Gupta was abused as a child (a big reason, initially, that he didn’t tell his parents about Shawn) and even when his mother re-married, the relationship between Sochi’s father and his family is strained.  They associate with Gupta out of their sense of familial duty, but that only requires them to associate with him and him alone.  They’re incredibly traditional.  They don’t approve of Fatima for many reasons, including and especially because she’s a “half-breed” (half-Indian, half-British).  They consider her a vixen who forced Gupta to break off his arranged marriage to follow her to the UK.  Because they don’t recognize her as family, they consider Sochi a bastard child.  They tried to associate with him when he was famous because he was famous, but as soon as the Chauhan’s moved to the US, they went back to thinking of him as a bastard child.

Sochi, not being the kind of person who deals with very traditional viewpoints very well, was a teenager the last time he saw them on a trip back.  When he was there, he came out to them as bisexual in a fit of anger at their narrow viewpoints and how they were treating his parents.  One of his aunts (who is actually a practicing witch), cursed him to always be met with unhappiness as large as his sins.  Needless to say…Sochi doesn’t think much of his paternal side of the family.

☯ - acts as a foil to my muse

((For a character that was intentionally meant to be a foil to Sochi, that would be Aaron.  In literature, a foil is a character who contrasts in order to highlight.  Some foils are complete opposites, some foils are very similar except for a few major differences.  Aaron is the second type of foil.  There’s a lot about the two of them that is similar–their family dynamics, their intelligence and fondness of mathematics, their sexualities and preferences, their attitude, their both guided by their emotions, their perfectionism–but their are two big differences between them: 1) both were privileged children in their way, but Aaron was raised within his loving, tight-knit family and Sochi was clearly not, 2) both are realistic, but Aaron is a pessimist and realist while Sochi is an optimist and realist. 

The way they see the world is incredibly different and leads Aaron to be more fragile, having much more of a bite to him and keeping the world at arms length so he can keep himself safe to do what he wants to do.  Sochi, on the other hand, is must stronger, having much more sweetness to him by embracing the world so he can experience anything and everything that he might want to do.

As for a character that Sochi has interacted with that’s not one of mine but foils him rather nicely is probably Aleister, actually.  Possibly for some of the similar reasons Aaron is, which is rather amusing.))
