Completely unrelated cold open: Lucy and Nolan arrive at the scene of a bank robbery where a naked guy is walking out with bags of cash because a wizard told him a bracket would make him invisible 😂 He then proceeds to take the bags off and stand there exposed because he thinks that they can see the bags floating but still not him 🙈
Nolan is posing for Bailey as she paints him??
Sanford visits with Lucy at work, she asks about some info she emailed him and he calls her his girlfriend 😳 Lucy points out he was quick to jump on that label 😂 She points out she is educating him because he can really make a difference in the justice system and he asks why she never went to law school. Lucy replies her parents wanted her to so she couldn’t do that🙈 Chris asks if it really bothered her that he called her his girlfriend and she said she’s fine with it as long as he’s fine with she labeling him as her work in progress.. Chris points out that he never knows when she’s joking and she replies good keeps him on his toes 😂🙈
As they are walking into roll call Aaron asks Lucy if she knows Bailey is painting Nolan’s portrait - because apparently he mentions it all the time. Aaron asks Nolan about tips on how to date so far outside of his league and Lucy jokes that that’s John’s thing (I honestly want to forget that Nolan and Chen ever dated🙈🙈🙈).
Aaron notes Nyla is not in uniform and she tells him he will have to wait and see why. Grey strolls into the room in a suit and gets cat called. When Aaron learns it’s plain clothes day he thinks it sounds awesome until Nyla points out it’s the day the highest percentage of rookies wash out of the program and then he looks scared 🙊
Nolan is assigned to the front desk with Smitty😂 A man demands to be seen, cutting the line and Nolan tells him to wait his turn.
Aaron pulls a lady over for having expired tags, Nyla notices a guy with a camera trying to tape the interaction.
John goes to talk to the guy who was demanding to be seen earlier after getting through the rush of people - no thanks to Smitty - but the guy is dead.
Tim comments that Lucy has been quiet and she asks him if he thinks she would be a good lawyer. He responds immediately “No - that’s a compliment” She points out that Wesley’s lawyer and they like Wesley, to which Tim points out they tolerate Wesley because they fear Lopez😂😂 Lucy Progressive DA could make a hell of a lot more difference than they as cops are doing, and Tim says We are not here to make a difference we are here to catch criminals and then they see a drive by shooting occur. The woman dies.
Aaron peruses the shooter and Nyla is giving a lot of instructions for someone who isn’t supposed to be there 😂 They lose the shooters car.
Tim is watch commander while Grey is in court. Nolan is off of the front desk but Tim tells him to stay on the poisoning victim from the lobby.
Nyla and Aaron are being followed by the camera guy, so they hatch a plan to see what is happening - turns out it’s part of his reality show crew trying to get additional footage since Aaron wouldn’t let them come into the station.
Back at the station Nolan fills Lucy in on his poison victim - he was recently paranoid someone was following him because he was about to testify before a grand jury. Angela tells Lucy her victim wasn’t random, but about to testify in Matteo Rubio’s grand jury - and it turns out that was who the poisoning victim was testifying against as well and Grey is also a witness and on his way to testify right now.
Grey parks his car and is about to go up into the court house when he notices a woman carrying a concealed weapon and tries to apprehend it, only for her to try and stab him then shoot him as he narrowly hides behind cars. She hits Grey in the shoulder but he manages to shoot her in the chest before passing out.
They next are in the hospital and Grey is getting fixed up while they work on the assassin who dies. Tim arrives in the ER to check on Grey who is clearly in shock. Tim assures him he has everything handled and Grey just needs to focus on himself.
Tim goes out to the waiting room and updates the whole gang. The threat isn’t over just because the female hit woman is dead, because the poisoner from the station was a man. Wesley is confused because witness lists are supposed to be confidential so how did Rubio find the info out.
Tim announces to the waiting room of cops that Grey needs around the clock security. He sends Lucy with Angela to check on who else was supposed to testify against Rubio. John needs to stay because he would be Grey’s union delegate since it was an officer involved shooting. When Nolan questions what he will say to him, Tim tells Nolan to be there for Grey like Grey was when Nolan shot and killed someone.
Tim is Going to find out who the hit woman was partnered with.
Aaron guesses he isn’t going to pass plain clothes day, and Nyla points out he definitely isn’t doing well so far. When the car in front of them rolls a stop sign Aaron pulls them over and it turns out to be the father of Patrick Walsh, the guy Aaron was accused of killing.
There is an altercation and between the filming guys and the existing emotions Aaron ends up having to arrest the dad because he tried to punch him.
At the DA’s office Angela is getting pissed with the DA (Delmonte) because he won’t give up the witness list so LAPD can put undercover officers in the witnesses’ homes to catch the assassins. Chris tried to reason with Del Monte that the best way to protect the witnesses is to catch the people trying to kill them but the guy doesn’t budge. Lucy looks pissed as she and Angela leave.
As Aaron is filling out the paperwork he tells Nyla that it isn’t right because the guy isn’t dangerous and if it was any other cop who pulled him over he never would have thrown a punch. Nyla tells him it’s his call, and Aaron decides to release him. Nyla tells him she will handle it from here, plain clothes day is over, nothing else good will come from Aaron trying to speak to the dad again.
As Nyla let’s the dad go he goes on about how Aaron was like another son to him but then he killed his boy. Nyla says there is nothing she can say that is going to change his mind so she is just going to offer her condolences.
Back at the DA’s office Chris grabs Lucy to talk. He gives her the witness list but begs her not to tell anyone where she got it because he would be fired on the spot and potentially prosecuted for leaking confidential files. Lucy tells him that they can’t catch criminals by becoming criminals, that they will find another way and hands the list back to him. Angela opens the door and tells them they just ID’d Greys shooter.
At the hospital Grey is awake and out of surgery. John goes to speak with him. He asks if Grey If he has spoken with Luna yet, Grey says she’s in Montreal and he didn’t think this was an over the phone conversation. Nolan tells him a wise man once told him this isn’t something you want your family to find out on the news. Grey knows he’s right.
Grey is sore everywhere and asks Nolan how he does it every day since they are about the same age. When he was shot before he checked himself out of the hospital and now he can’t even think about doing that. Nolan says that it’s probably because he was never that guy - there has never been a time where he didn’t feel achy and sore after a day of being a cop. So Grey surmises he needs to accept the fact that he’s old now.
It turns out this is the first time Grey has taken a life. John points out that he didn’t have a choice, she was going to kill him.
Lucy and Tim are staking out the house the dead hit woman was staying at. They and a group of officers search the house but it’s empty. Lucy smells smoke and they see they just missed the guy and he burned up some evidence before he left but they find one scrap with a name on it.
Angela storms into the interrogation room to confront a paralegal from the DA’s office who sold information to Rubio. He sold them the list of witnesses and the name of the prosecutor.
Tim and Lucy are on the way to the DA’s office but the phone lines are not going through. Lucy tries to call Chris but he’s talking with Del Monte and not picking up. Del Monte asks if he’s bothered by them not sharing with the LAPD today, and Chris says yes because he thought they were all on the same team, but Del Monte points out that LAPD has a lot of leaks so they have to play everything close for the vest. Chris finally picks up his phone and Lucy tells him someone is coming to kill Del Monte just as someone kills the lights in the DA’s office. Lucy tells Chris he has to hide but Chris says he has to go warn Del Monte and hangs up. (Okay pause: I don’t like Chris in that he is a roadblock for Chenford - but if Lucy loses another person on this god damn show I am going to scream)
Chris is sneaking around the office and sees the hitman walking through and follows him. Del Monte then comes out of his office and loudly asks Chris if he’s seen his phone and Chris yells Sean get down and the bullets start flying. They get back to an office and go out the back way. The hitman follows and then we see Lucy Tim and other officers arrive on scene. Chris and Sean are making there way through the office and Sean trips on some furniture and makes a loud noise. The hitman starts shooting again and the officers follow the sounds of the gun. Sean and Chris lock themselves in the copy room and Chenford arrest the hitman before he can get to them.
Nyla and Aaron are leaving the station and she tells him it was the most unique but not the worst plain clothes day story she’s heard but because she pulled the plug on it he’s going to have to do it again next week.
Morris, the producer guy comes up to them to talk about how good the footage they got today and Nyla is 3 seconds away from killing him when Aaron pulls him aside to talk.
Aaron tells Morris that he needs to delete the footage from today or he’s going to fire him because that dad’s pain is not a commodity to sell.
Chris is in his office having a drink and Lucy comes to check on him. She says she should check his vitals (???😂) and when she’s checking his pulse she says it’s good and steady but then comments his heart rate is a little fast. Lucy asks him why he tried to give her the witness list - because he thought it was the right thing to do, or because he was trying to impress her. He “pleads the fifth”
At the hospital Tim tells Grey the hit man flipped on Rubio so he will be going away foe life in prison. Grey starts to tell Tim there is going to be some follow up he will need to do and Tim says he knows all about the sergeants meetings on Monday’s, the captain’s meetings on Friday’s, etc. And Grey replies back that it’s not that he doesn’t think Tim can do it - then Tim finishes for him that Grey has trouble letting go. Tim jokes for him to think of it like a trial for retirement. Nolan then arrives with food and Tim heads out.
Grey gives Nolan some advice about how he will get ahead to become a TO. Before he leaves John tells Grey that he’s going to try and replay the fight over and over in his mind but there will be plenty of time for that, tonight he should just try and sleep.
When John arrives home he gets caught tying to look at Bailey’s painting, she had stayed up waiting for him to get home. When she suggests they go to bed he says he doesn’t think he could, so then he asks if she wants to finish the painting and she says no because it’s awful. He doesn’t believe her because she’s the most talented person he knows but when he unveils it it is terrible 😂
