Classic screen, stage, television and glamour icons who set sail on The Love Boat (ABC, 1977-1986). Producer Aaron Spelling, once an actor himself and married to actress Carolyn Jones in his younger years, had a keen love and appreciation for classic Hollywood and made every effort to get iconic stars on board the show, luring many of the older stars out of retirement with luxurious star treatment on set, enticing paychecks, and all the bells and whistles they wanted in order to accommodate their every desire. Some stars, like Lana Turner and Ursula Andress, were game to go on actual cruises to faraway destinations when the show undocked from the studio and filmed special episodes on location, Turner to the Caribbean and Andress to China. Stars who appeared on the show featured in this gif set: Lana Turner, Diahann Carroll, Carol Channing, Janet Leigh, Rita Moreno, Debbie Reynolds, Joan Blondell, Joan Collins (then starring on Spelling's other hit show Dynasty), Shelley Winters, Cyd Charisse in between sisters Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland (who appeared on separate episodes due to their decades-long feud and deep rooted animosity), Ursula Andress, Pearl Bailey, Celeste Holm, Ann Miller between sisters Eva and Zsa Zsa Gabor (again on separate episodes, though they were reasonably close in real life), Tina Louise, Jane Wyman, Julie Newmar, Ginger Rogers, Dorothy Lamour, and Greer Garson. The number of Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe and Tony award nominations and wins in this group is tremendous, with one EGOT winner (Rita Moreno) among them.

Velvet! This was Aaron Spelling's attempt to update the "Charlie's Angels" formula for the fitness-crazy '80s, and sadly, it failed to make the network schedule, airing instead as a TV movie-of-the-week. The premise centered around a covert quartet of female daredevil government agents, each member with her own distinct skills -- parachuting, stunt driving, helicopter piloting, motocross racing, and munitions -- publicly operating as instructors of a high-end aerobics studio franchise (!).

The title sequence is frankly awesome and features leotard-clad dancers backgrounded by misty rainbow prisms, the pulsating theme song ("Strong, like a magnet, draws you closer, it's electric, something strange pulling you, takes you down -- DOWN TO VELVET!") putting it over the top. Many is the viewer who suspects that this was the inspiration for Uma Thurman's "Fox Force Five" anecdote from "Pulp Fiction." In a better world, this would've had a doll line complete with interchangeable leotards and evening wear, along with a command center playset.

M*A*S*H reference in 'One for the Money' Season 3 episode 2 of Golden Girls.

(Sorry it's not great quality-- had to condense it to post it.)

Context for you youngins out there-

-This episode aired 12 Jul, 1988 (for the record, 'Goodbye, Farewell & Amen' (last episode of M*A*S*H) aired Thu, 27 Dec 1984.

Also a comment on Sophia-- as most of you know, the M*A*S*H finale was a MASSIVE event. Sophia obviously being out of the loop not just for 3.5 years, but also out of the loop on such a MASSIVE event was the joke.

-(not part of the jokes in this scene but just a bit of trivia for Golden Girls) - McLean Stevenson (who played Henry Blake on M*A*S*H ) later played Stan's brother Ted (Stan is Dorothy's really awful ex husband) in Golden Girls.

-The soap opera Hotel Sophia references (linked) starred Josh Brolin and aired from 24 November, 1983-5 May, 1988.

It was an Aaron Spelling show (already tells you what to expect with the quality-- IMDb rates the show at a very generous 6.4-- about 2.5 full points too high, if you ask me). So Sophia's incredulous comment of 'Hotel is still on and M*A*S*H isn't?' is 'why would this terrible soap opera no one will ever remember still on when a great show like M*A*S*H is off the air?'

-Sophia references a woman called Donna Rice--

'How gullible do you think I am, Donna Rice?' Donna Rice was a beautiful model who ended up having an affair with an American senator-- and presidental election front runner Gary Hart. The affair broke in 1987. Like Monica Lewinski who would come after Rice just a few years later, Rice was absolutely destroyed in the press, her name dragged through the mud, and she was just abused terribly in the press for it all. Like Lewinski, she also became an activist after her ordeal - tho, sadly, Rice seems to have become a far right wing MAGA christian. So, you know, ew. But Sophia's comment is only about a year after Rice's affair was revealed, so she was a constant running joke and punchline in a LOT of media at the time. Which was really gross. Women were (and still are) treated terribly in the media most of the time.
