“ You know that none of us condone any of those things,”
He keeps his voice calm, steady, void of any judgement, free of any tone that might come across as harsh or disapproving. He tries to keep her anchored, tries to sew all the love he has for his niece into each small syllable. He’s terrified of what might happen if he fails to convey even an ounce of how much his words are for her && not against. Terrified of how this could end--and not just because of the obvious bad outcome.
“ But you also know that I can’t condone murder. Especially not like this. He’s unarmed, beaten. He can’t even defend himself. I can’t make choices like this for you, Lian, no one can. But if you decide to walk the path of a killer, I will at least see you be an honorable one. ”
He doesn’t want to, but he readies his bow. Sets his sights to intercept--maybe split her bowstring. He knows the gesture seems final, like he’s making up her mind for her, but he can’t run the risk of her being quicker to fire than he is to draw. It didn’t mean he would stop trying to talk. He’s still certain that if he can just make her think for a few seconds, she’ll realize she’s acting out of emotion instead of reason. It’s an emotion that he knows he can’t hold against her--the man in question was certainly vile--but that didn’t change the situation.
It didn’t change the fact that Lian was ready to kill.
It didn’t change the fact that Connor was not willing to let her make that mistake.
&& it definitely didn’t change the fact that he’s not ready to see the teen walk away from him estranged.
“ You know what happens if you shoot him, Speedy. I can’t let you use that bow to take a life. Please think about what you’re doing. ”

The words are spoken softly and he knows they’re meant to reassure. But right now, nothing seems reassuring. Even those words, which seem so important are nothing but echoes of consonants and vowels.
“ You shouldn’t even be here. ”
His voice is strained, but level. She’s injured already. She should retreat as soon as she possibly can, put some distance between herself and the situation. Get back to the house or the caveand get some medical attention. After all, he had promised Roy that he’d take care of his little girl. If she was going to insist on going out, she should at least be supervised. That was what he had said. His own words. But now he wondered how much his supervision actually mattered.
Listening wasn’t exactly a family trait.
“ I can handle this alone. Get going. ”
