“i can’t believe you wanted to get a real tree,” alex huffed, trying to fit the tree through the front door.

“it’s our first christmas living together, alex,” you yelled from behind her, squeezing through the doorway. “we have to make it special.”

you both carried the tree to the living room, and it took some time before you both managed to place it into the stand.

“you make a good point,” she sighed, panting softly. “but we are never getting a real tree again.”

“why not?” you pouted, leaning against her chest and looking up. “tell me you didn’t enjoy going to that little christmas tree farm and picking one out.”

“i did, darling,” she smiled, looking into your eyes softly. “what i didn’t enjoy was stuffing it into the car and bringing it inside.”

“okay, that’s fair,” you laughed. “but, if we’re going to get a fake tree next year, can it be really big?”

alex grinned, leaning down to kiss you softly. “we’ll talk about it when the time comes, sweetheart,” she smiled. “but right now, i think we have a tree to decorate.”

together, the two of you carried down boxes of ornaments and decorations you had stored in the attic; some from your childhood, some from hers. popping open one of the boxes, you pulled out a bundle of lights and looked up at alex. “can you help with these?”

“of course,” she grinned. working quickly, you were both able to wrap the lights around properly, and it actually turned out well.

walking over to the box with your name on it, you grabbed a few ornaments and began to hang them around the tree. alex walked over, holding one against her hand. “where’s this one from?”

“oh, that’s from my mom from when i was younger,” you explained. “she had this tradition of getting me an ornament each year.”

“oh my god, that’s adorable,” she murmured, smiling softly. “my parents did something similar, but it was a family one each year.”

“hang some up with me,” you grinned, dragging alex over to the boxes. she smiled at you, taking a few and hanging them up. as the night progressed, your tree began to become covered in ornaments, connecting your childhood with alex’s.

once you both were done, you flopped onto the couch. resting your head on alex’s lap, you sighed happily. the tree was exactly how you imagined it would be, better even. “wait, one second,” alex said suddenly, gently moving you off of her lap and walking towards your room. “there’s an ornament we forgot to hang up.”

“no there isn’t,” you called out, confused. “the boxes are empty.”

“this one is new,” alex beamed, handing you a small box. looking up and then down again, you carefully opened the box, gasping softly when you saw what was inside.

there was a small ornament of a house, one that had a striking resemblance to your own. on the top read, “alex & y/n, the first of many together.”

“we can get an ornament together each year,” alex said quietly. “it’ll be our christmas tradition.”

“oh my god,” you murmured, looking at alex. “it’s perfect.”

“well, then let’s hang it up,” alex whispered, taking your hand. together, you placed the ornament on the tree, front and center.

“i love it,” you smiled, leaning into alex’s arms. “thank you alex, i love you.”

“i love you more, y/n ,” she murmured, kissing you softly, the light from the tree illuminating your faces.

it really was the first of many. you couldn’t wait to spend the rest of your life with alex.
