It's been a year and a day since I last abandoned a literary gift for a stranger to find. I had to stop due to Covid-19 but this public art project has always been on my mind. The other day, someone abandoned a mattress right in my neighborhood. I've always wanted to deface one! Is it weird that this finding brings me so much joy? It's been a long time since I felt such excitement. It lights up my eyes whenever I work since it's in full view of my window. The garbage men didn't pick it up which was a huge relief and it rained so I doubt anyone would want it now so I'm going to write directly on it. Honestly, there is no better place in my area to leave behind a set so this feels like a signal from the Universe to restart #abandonedb2dbc . I'm currently obsessed with empty cigar boxes I buy for $2-$5 at tobacco barn. I want to abandon this vibrant purple Super Fly box which will hold The Pillow Book by @jeekohpoet, @grainlitmag fall 2016 #litmag, The Airship Adventures of Little Nemo by Windsor McCay comic strip collection published by @taschen, and @hoaxzine issue 9 on Feminisms and Vulnerabilities. I'll also include @laphamsquart Flesh issue from Fall 2016 & Palimpsest by @catvalente. I'll be throwing in other things too but I'm going to select them as I (re)read these #books. I wanna choose objects that are connected to these works. I also want to write something too, just unsure what it'll be. I know it'll be an experiment. . Ooh maybe a custom experience. Perhaps something they can do in bed? It'll definitely linked with these works. My head is buzzing haha. . I will be sharing excerpts from these books as I read them and any drafts & blueprints. I'm thrilled that I can write for @boredtodeathbookclub again which is the home for this #publicart endeavor. I want to be more diligent and dedicated this time around. I'm also excited cuz Palimpsest was recommended to me during my bibliotherapy session from four years ago with @center4fiction. So bad that it took me this long to finally begin reading any of my prescriptions but maybe this is the right time. . Serendipity like this is rare so I'm not squandering this chance. For the 4th #abandonedB2DBC, i decided to leave behind "Significant Objects: 100 Extraordinary Stories About Ordinary Things" by @hilobrow & Rob Walker. It's a "literary and economic experiment" where they took cheap trinkets and had writers make a story about each of them. Then they sold them on eBay and made thousands from the objects! Isn't that cool?! They have statistics and analysis too. I love reading them. Here's a great story about a flip flop frame by @merrill_markoe. It makes me want to do the exact same thing hehe. What I need now is a cheap tchotcke to base my own flash fiction off of. But nothing in my house is jumping at me unfortunately. I think i'll look at some thrift stores, that seems like more fun anyway hehe. I want to try do this before the new year arrives. It's getting bitterly cold in the northeast though. Maybe I should leave it indoors somewhere, hmm. In any case, it's been too long since I worked on this passion public art project. Hoping the new year brings more writing, energy, and strikethroughs. I got these goodies from @amgreetings & happy mart/dollar dynasty. The first photo are stuff i wanna keep for myself tho originally it was for #abandonedB2DBC lol. I might have to keep the bookends cuz it's a tad heavy and idk if the stranger could carry it home. Maybe i could leave a totebag? Grey marbled #stationery from @papyrus, chalk/📸 scrapbook/bookends/trio of word cards on rings from @daiso_usa, snail mail how to book by @michellemackintosh & @hardiegrantbooks, card catalog notecards by @chroniclebooks and #minimergencykit for her by @pinchprovisions. I can always buy them again, well some of them. The emergency kit contains so much! Bandage, pain reliever, double sided tape, breath drops, mending kit, dental floss, clear nail polish, hair spray, emery board, tampon, lip balm, clear elastics, stain remover, nail polish remover pad, deodorant towelette, earring backs, and safety pin. Damnnnnn. Next set of goodness is of we go together pop up cards by @chroniclebooks, @meandmybigideas cardstock sheets, flock yeah swans compact mirror & mini banner by @paperdestiny & @papyrus, love wax seal from the paper studio and was bought at @hobbylobby. I'm going to attempt to not buy anymore stuff for at least a month and after i leave the fourth package. I really need to curb my spending. I already have so many items so I'm bound to have the right object for no. 4. Tho i'm stuck on what the books should be. Possibilities could be quirky architecture, Sophie Calle, or snail mail. I think i'll just read them and hopefully figure out that way. And still need a location, probably nyc. But which borough and where at? Hmm. Suggestions are welcome. I could use some feedback. Bought some goodies to prolong #abandonedB2DBC and to enhance my joy. Though it has never stopped being fun. Not once. First stop is this @katespadeny escape the ordinary #notebook I received last christmas from my cousin kaye and her husband justin and their kids. Isn't it the perfect statement for this endeavor? I fell in love with the nb at first sight but didn't know what to use it for and its SIX neon pink bookmark ribbons. Then it hit me to utilize it for the project: developing rules, insert photos of each gift, drafting creative works, dropoff details, and what each package contains. Using the 2nd marker for what used books I should get next, and the rest for possible locations, themes I wanna try, and hopefully more. I'm really happy I found different color brads from awhile ago. I love swiveling the photos hehe The business cards I got from @4over4 where if you promote them on your social media, you get 200 free business cards with their site on the back. I designed it myself, leaving blanks to enter date and time, theme, location, and what number it is. It also provides a summary of the project and to encourage the stranger to keep it. The lower right hand photo is from the first abandonment in nashville, tn. The card could look better but I still like it and it gets the job done. I think haha. I took an array of photos of possible future pairs of books, sometimes with coordinated small gifts. I have so many hoarded books so these photos are useful reminders. I can flip through them when I find an object I like and see if it goes well with any of them. It makes it easier to identify the next package too. Like a nifty game. Finally I bought a seal with the word LOVE, and different colored waxes. I thought they would make a lovely touch on the letters. They were on sale at @hobbylobby and I always wanted to use a wax seal. I'm skittish around fire, but I figured using this lacy lighter would make me feel better. Kinda wish I got the pickle one instead haha. Still I'm less afraid of fire now which feels great. I enjoy seeing this project evolve. Better organized for more wonderful results. #abandonedB2DBC Yesterday I left the 3rd package outside of grove street path station in #jerseycity. It was composed of The Romantic Movement: Sex, Shopping, and the Novel by #alaindebotton from @picador, The Dictionary of Love by John Stark from @williammorrowbooks, Who Will My Lover Be? Marble game by @chroniclebooks, and a fictional dear john #letter i wrote. It was from Blair to Isaac and he is a politically incorrect, generous gourmet. The traits were my results from the marble game. It's a neat character generator. I was also inspired to include words from the dictionary which i underlined and drew a #linegraph of how many minutes of silence she gave which increases as the more offensive he becomes. The graph was inspired by the diagrams used in the romantic movement. I love alain's philosophical and analytical style. The #romance #novel also took place in the 90s and i adored how he dissected the answering machine. He's one of my favorite authors ever and this #book pushed him upwards. By the way, the back of the Isaac letter had a candy heart sticker that says "Eat Shiznit". Delightful hehe. I also used for the first time a wax seal stamp which says LOVE. Imperfect but it made me proud. The dictionary was pretty naughty and entertaining. I learned about celeb quickie marriages, aphrodisiacs, and alcoholic drink recipes hehe. I hope whoever picked up the books liked them. The postcard was published by @papress And it actually plays a role in the novel. Went shopping with my friend Caitlin today and picked up a bunch for #abandonedb2dbc ! At @tuesdaymorning I got a #journal of #pagodas a year of watercolors by #architecturalwatercolors this colorful notebook would really suit the doorbells of florence and the hyperart thomasson book that showcases Japan. Also bought 24 rainbow ribbons by @americancrafts & black chalkboard tags by @jillibeansoup At @dollartree i got white chalk and #joblot glitter gel pens and an artist canvas. At @marshalls I got this silver dotted #stationery from @graphiquedefrance , favor bags, floral writing set from @mgml_uk , and a fake book that holds secrets hehe by world art group Finally we went to @fivebelow and I got these two writing prompt books from @piccadillyofficial and @art101usa chalk malkers. Hopefully before the year is over, I'll utilize them all. The items were pretty cheap and I hereby declare that the gifts can't cost more than a sawbuck without tax. But before I leave these items behind, i'm gonna write down the juicy ones from both 400 and #300writingprompts hehe.

This impactful #book of #flashfiction is so damn delightful and strange. Andrew Losowsky's "The Doorbells of Florence: fictional stories and photographs" is chockful of weird wonder. Basically Losowsky took photos of #doorbells in #florence and wrote these tales of their owners. The captivating photos and Joel Holland's incredible handlettering make this such a special book. Just read Lungarno Soderini 8. Isn't it fantastic? This work makes me want to write and create my own project. A fun challenge that would push me to get out and stretch my imagination a little. One day. I want to keep this book for myself so badly and that's how I know I should give it away to some lucky stranger for #abandonedb2dbc . I wish I remembered how I came across this lovely book. There were so many people that I wanted to hear more about. I could genuinely read novels about them. They had such magic contained in such succinct tales.
