Things have been kinda quiet around these parts the last couple of weeks since I've been working away on this. But guys, that was seriously a GOOD weekend.
Even with all the late nights to get this nerd finished up on time and the handful of times I just put down the needle and just stared blankly off into the unspecific distance, questioning my life choices, it was SO worth it.
Most cosplays take some wearing before you get used to the character but Goemon felt like coming home. Maybe because he's been in the works for a year, maybe because I've seen Rise Against the Sword 274 times, or maybe I just needed my Mifune fix again. Probably all of the above.
Winning Best in Show for the Hall Cosplay Contest was A) a complete surprise and B) flattering as heck! Shout-out to Otafest's kind and hella knowledgeable judge who stopped me in the venders' hall to ask about the costume. Also shout-out to my poor waraji sandals, who have been to Calgary Expo, Edmonton Expo, Dragon*Con, Japan, and multiple photoshoots and have held up remarkably well. The soles are fine but the ties have pulled apart, so time for new ones!
And definitely time for more Toshiro M. cosplays again (namely Isaburo Sasahara, Daisaku Sasa, and the dude from Life of a Horse Trader lol). Thank you Murasaki Cosplay Photography for the hangs and the photos last night!
I took a couple of hours this morning to get the plate for Goemon's headdress sorted out. I was initially thinking of ordering a fabric to use as a backing but I couldn't find anything that really felt correct. Thankfully, I DID have a big bin of leather scraps, a print-out of a similar design, a good stylus, and a big cup of tea. Protip: When tracing on to veg-tan with a paper stencil, cover the paper surface with tape first. This gives you a smoother surface to trace plus it prevents the paper from getting too damp from the wet leather underneath. 👌
Was screen-cappin’ for cosplay references the other day and got distracted by Toshiro Mifune’s wonderful facial expressions as Goemon in Hiroshi Inagaki’s Rise Against the Sword.
For a Inagaki film, it’s surprisingly subtle on occasion, especially in Goemon’s characterisation.
