Atlas Clouds- Shake

The indie artist Atlas Clouds rounded out the month of May with a new single titled Shake. The single is calming with an ethereal sound. The song builds to its chorus in volume and intensity, as if telling a story beyond its lyrics, and the chorus is the climax. The song peaks during its chorus, with intense instrumentals and vocals that are reminiscent of gospel.

Lyrically, Shake is easy to follow and sing along with, and the vocals do not seem to be the center of attention in the song. The limited lyrics paired with the instrumentals  is well done and allows the listener to focus on the multiple instruments used within the single. The use of the single word, “shake” before the crescendo of the chorus is memorable and exciting. Shake is a unique song that tells a story in its sound. It makes for a listen that you would not expect before pressing play, which makes it a strong song that can stand on its own as a single.

Bad Galaxy- Never Been Afraid

The New York alt-folk group Bad Galaxy released its latest single, Never Been Afraid in late April, telling an enticing story with the help of a catchy guitar tune. The single starts out strong and memorable with its guitar riff. The vocals complement the sound well, growing in emotion as the song continues. The song can be pictured to play in a saloon style bar, in a good way.

The lyrics are picturesque and detailed, allowing the listener to follow along, but without the song’s meaning for context, the listener can create their own meaning. There is a moment of spoken word that makes the song interesting because it is unexpected. The singer’s voice intensifies as the song continues, allowing for the listener to feel engaged from start to finish. The song is overall well put-together and enjoyable to listen to with a fun story and catchy instrumentals.
