I just found out that actually they want the sex you were born with, so they know what kinds of diseases you could get and stuff like that! It’s a medical history thing, not a gender binary thing. You can also leave a note next to it though!

but like a couple of things

1) I'm going there for my mental health

okay, it is definitely a fine line, but here are some guidelines:

always defer to marginalized people when they're talking about their situations. like, if someone asks you a question about a problem a marginalized group faces, find resources written by someone from that marginalized group to point them towards.

make sure you're not talking over them or for them. again, they know best about their own situations. as an ally, your job is to make sure that their voices get heard, not to talk for them.

if someone from a marginalized group is saying "ugh, all [people from majority group] suck," DO NOT go "but we're not all like that." you're making the situation about you. if you're doing the right thing, they are not talking about you. them making a generalization about a group that is generally hurtful/oppressive to them is not the same is the oppression they face. also, if you feel the need to instantly defend yourself, you might want to examine your behavior and figure out whether or not you are one of the people they are talking about.

if someone from the group you're allying with says that you are doing something harmful/oppressive, listen to them and make steps to change your behavior. don't make it about you. don't just apologize. back it up with your actions. 

don't spend more time defending allies than you do defending people from the group you're allied with. they just do not need it.

do not tone-police. meaning, if someone from a marginalized point is angry about the oppression they face and uses harsh language, don't tell them that they have to be nice. they are under no obligation to be nice or educational. they are a person, not a resource for more privileged people.

don't threaten to revoke your allyship because they're being mean/rude/angry/not presentable

on the other hand, DO use your position of privilege to call out oppression. it's fucked up, but a lot of the time, people are more likely to listen to a person outside of the marginalized group than one within it. often, you have the privilege of not getting angry because the issue does not directly affect you. use this privilege to be nice and educational. again, back yourself up with firsthand sources whenever possible, but USE YOUR POWER FOR GOOD!

so yeah, those are just some suggestions. another thing that makes that comic really shitty is the beginning where they're like "omg we're so oppressed." very minimizing of the actual struggles people in marginalized groups face.

but anyway, I accept your apology and I appreciate you asking for suggestions and I am significantly less angry at this moment than I was when I made that post.
