Speechless is still one of my favorite shows of all time and for the most part, the disability representation is amazing, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t have some big flaws and I think the biggest one has been obvious for the past few episodes. The show can’t ever really go an episode without centering a story that’s completely around JJ’s disability. Even something as stupid as him wanting to go film a B-film at a college campus had Maya and Jimmy spending the entire episode stressing about how he could live out there. His whole personality seems to be “wheelchair” as of late.
I mean I get it, to an extent, your disability is a gigantic part of who you are, the more severe the disability, the more severe of an impact. I get it. But, you know, an hour ago, my biggest crisis wasn’t anything wheelchair-related. It was trying to figure out how quickly I could roast tomatoes without burning the olive oil. (The key is opening a window and staring down death). Ten minutes ago, my crisis had nothing to do with the lack of accommodations in the world. It was about me realizing that it was the first day of the new semester and I had already forgotten to read a book. Whoops. Nine seconds ago, my biggest crisis wasn’t about the quality of life that a disabled person could have, it was about me groaning as I realized that I’m typing this post as a means of procrastinating instead of reading. Crap. Okay, I have to go, but seriously, this is definitely starting to bother me about the show.
