Maybe I’m A Believer
There are nights, many of them, where I’ve walked alone in the dark. Some have been lonely nights, some have been nights surrounded by my own imagination, some have been nights with nothing but the sound of my own steps and my own breathing while I watch the moon through smog-covered eyes. On nights like those, I’ve played tag with fear. I’m not afraid of the dark, but I am afraid of the possibility it conceals.
In that tree, is there a supervillain crouched to watch his future nemesis walk by? Is he ready to spring out at me? Will I jump back? Will I scream? Will I somehow discover that I’m more than I am; find I can fly or disappear or speak to stars?
That barking dog, will it chase me down? Will it grab the hem of my coat in its teeth? Will someone come out, after the dog? Will they grab a collar, pull the dog away, apologize? Will we meet eyes and will I finally feel love?
That flickering light, is it a sign? Will it suddenly go out, then explode with a light that will open the doorway to another world? Will I dare to step through, find a world where things are more perfect, but still need me to act as their hero?
Those steps I just took, the way I blinked, that tug on my bracelet, were they a signal I didn’t know? Did I just intercept that stranger under the streetlight, giving them the code of an organization I know nothing about? In a moment, will I be thrown into a secret situation that wasn’t mine?
But every time, I keep walking into the dark. I expand on these small stories, I tell myself that I’m secretly a necromancer, a superhero, an alien, a spy. I live these stories beyond the walk. I arrive home and still I wait for the Call to Action. Was that shadow my mentor? I don’t know.
But truly, I have to believe that it’s all real. That any moment I’ll turn a corner and discover that life is more than high school and long nights, dragging blankets of sorrow and tightening ropes of stress. It hasn’t happened yet.
I am patient.
I am delusional.
I am a believer.
And I believe that someday we can all find our secret on a dark walk, our mentor or fairy or love or power. Just take another step out of the light of the streetlamp, and notice that the moon just winked at you.
