I'm usually good at keeping to a rhythm. Give me a pattern and I'll follow it endlessly. I know life doesn't fit into 8 count sections, but I can usually get by with a couple extra half counts tossed in. But you keep me on the off-beat, struggling to pick up the moves you're showing me. Just when I think I know what's next, you switch it up on me. An ever changing routine, a confusing yet exhilarating dance. Hard to stay light on my feet when I'm falling so fast. Have to keep my balance, but I just don't see how. One minute you're twirling and spinning me til I'm about to crash, next minute you're holding me close and keeping me on track. You're not as smooth as you think you are. You know how to lead but not well enough for me to catch on. Just when I think I see where you're going, I'm wrong, and I have to lean close to not head for a fall. I wish you would pick just one melody, one simple routine just to start, and then build it from there. But you're not building to anything, you already know what you want, and know it's not me. So you're not sticking to anything, just moving how you feel and waiting until she returns. I try to step away, too many people on the floor. Try to give my spinning head and dizzy heart a moment to recover. But even when I turn away, I know you're dancing without me. I know the music goes on and you don't try to stop it. I know in my heart that you won't notice when I slip away. But I can't stop coming back to be spun around and lifted away. One of these days, it'll all be too much. My aching feet and wounded heart will overwhelm my head, and I'll have to accept that I will not be the one that you choose, I will not be the one that others watch and wish they could cut in. One of these days, I will finally accept that I will not be getting my wish, that the shoulders I hold are not mine to keep, that the twirls and the spins do not leave you as breathless like I always am. But til then I will be the best partner that I'm able to be. You may just be practicing your steps, you may just be finding your own rhythm, but you will never know what it was to me, how it was for me. That when I grip you too tight, it's not just for balance, that when I miss a step, it's cause I was lost in your eyes, that when I'm feeling dizzy, it's only because your arms around me made me forget how to breath. And I will never tell you, because I want to keep this dance with you as it is. Perfect and broken and moving and crazy... And ours. And mine.
