Just out of curiosity, what are you studying? You seem like a literature or creative writing major to me -- just in the way you analyze narrative media like the recent "Ghost in the Shell" remake. Sorry if I'm prying

You’re not prying at all!

I am a Psychology/Linguistics double major and a Philosophy/Legal Studies double minor. However, my absolute passion is storytelling, and that is what I aspire to do in the future.

The reason I am not taking English or creative writing in college is because, the way I see it, I will always be interested in those things, and so I will have opportunities to study it later. I also believe that creative writing, in particular, has many learning opportunities outside of college.

As such, I wanted to study something in college that I likely would not be able to outside of an academic setting, and everything I am learning in my courses is being put directly back into my creative writing. For my aspirations as a storyteller, rather than learning to write, I felt it was better use of my college time to just learn in general: The more knowledge I have, the more vivid a world and more complex characters I can create.

Do you have any writing habits? Personally, I pace the room after every 2 or 3 sentences, just going through my mind what should come next before getting back to my desk and typing it out.

You know that thing some people do when they draw faces, where they make the expression they’re drawing? I do that, only when I write emotional scenes. It’s subconscious and a reason I can’t write in front of other people, ahaha.

Aside from that, my writing habits include getting so invested that I don’t eat or drink water because I don’t want to taste anything, ahaha. There’s this thing where once I find that mental state where I am disconnected from my body enough to focus purely on what I’m thinking, that I don’t want to do anything that might draw awareness to my body, like moving, eating, drinking, or speaking.

It is probably unhealthy, so I am working on it, ahaha.

I saw your reblog of Southern Gothic prompts and wanted to ask if you have a favorite, or preferred, genre to write,read, or watch. Mine is noir.

Write: I don’t really write genres so much as have high concepts, and I love all of them! Most of my stories, once I tell my friends, we all sit down and go “... What genre is this??” Often the answer is there is none because I’ve gone and created something super weird and unconventional. Actually, I guess you could say that I’m bad at genre fiction - the standard horror, mystery, high fantasy, scifi styles, etc. I’ll write horror, mystery, fantasy, or scifi, but they won’t be in the genre’s writing style.

Read: Again, hard to pinpoint a genre, but I don’t like stories that try to be too realistic. The point of fiction, for me, is escapism, so I enjoy reading about outlandish situations and what would be ‘realistic’ within that, or I enjoy reading about... well, just an interesting character in an interesting situation. A book gets bonus points if they have either a strong platonic relationship in lieu of a romance or a romantic relationship in which they never verbally say “I love you” because they express their love in other ways. 

Watch: I tend to dislike watching fantasy. CGI just doesn’t do it for me, ruins the aesthetic appeal of it. So, my favorite genres to watch tend to be things grounded in a modern setting, either a comedy or a thriller. 

Listen: You didn’t ask for ‘listen,’ but I love eerie podcasts. Limetown was a delight. There’s something so intimate about characters speaking directly into your ears, so when that’s taken advantage of and a story starts making ominous threats, that’s the fun stuff.

52. Favorite food? and 56. Most used word?

52: My favorite food is probably strawberry shortcake, since I can’t imagine ever getting sick of that. Actually, just strawberries in general, but it has to be perfectly ripe. I can’t stand blemished strawberries... they creep me out.

56: This really depends on what story I’m writing at the time, since my writing influences my speech, but it’s probably at present, “Fascinating.”

Corn maze & cauldron?

Corn maze: My favorite autumn activity is sitting with a warm drink and watching the wind blow leaves outside a cafe window. I’m accompanied with a book, a notebook, or a good friend. This is actually my favorite activity in any season, but the scenery changes: in the winter, it’s snowfall; in the spring, it’s rain. Actually, I guess my favorite summer activity is watching a horror movie with watermelon.

Cauldron: If I had the opportunity to make a potion, I would make a potion that would allow me to LUCID DREAM BECAUSE I CAN’T AND I HAVE TRIED EVERY SINGLE TECHNIQUE THAT EXISTS.

74. What is your favorite book? Damn, went straight for the hard one. This really depends on what time you ask me and what story of my own I am writing at the moment. At the moment it’s The Kick-Ass Writer: 1001 Ways to Write Great Fiction, Get Published, & Earn Your Audience by Chuck Wendig because his pull-no-punches humor has definitely gotten me motivated to write now that I’m done with the school year.

81. Tea or coffee?Tea! 100% tea all the way. I actually haven’t tried coffee yet, and because I don’t want to develop a caffeine dependency, I’m not all too tempted to try, ahaha. Which means that my ko-fi is misleading since none of you are actually buying me a coffee, you’re probably buying me juice or tea. Of tea, I enjoy green tea, English breakfast tea, and sweetened peach iced tea!

34. Listening to? At this moment in time? I’m kind of letting the opening song to Quan Zhi Gao Shou (The King’s Avatar) - that Chinese mmorpg anime - finish while I answer these, which probably isn’t the answer you were looking for, but is the truth. I am super into this anime. I reinstalled Guild Wars 2 because of this anime (and was disappointed aha). I am on episode 7 already. If you want a proper song rec though, the most recent song I listened to was “KARATE” by Babymetal, so there’s that.
