Oya
Oya is the Orisha of the wind and tempests. She is believed to be one of Sango’s wives. Her name means “she tore” in Yoruba. Oya is also known as Oya-Iyansan “mother of nine” because of the Niger river which is known as Odo-Oya (Oya’s river) among the Yorubas traditionally has nine tributaries. She is also the older sister of Yemoja and Osun. She is also the protector of all women.
Oya is the wind and rainstorms. She is the mother of chaos and the goddess of sudden change, revolution and upheaval. She is a free spirit unbound by convention. In the past, Yoruba women did not hunt, but Oya was an accomplished hunter. Oya protects the spirit of those who have passed and reminds future generations of where they came from. She is the last breath of life and she governs over the realm of the dead. Oya gives children and wealth to her adherents and protects them from all dangers.
