hii, what's the clothing style in swallow in the dark?
I'm SO happy you asked! :))
The character's clothes will be described here and there in the story (like August's yellow leather gloves, for ex. and their long dark overcoat), but I'm always excited to rant about their clothes or accessories so I'll do that under the cut:))
Firstly, the clothing style is pretty versatile in SW, I'll try to give the MC as much options as I can (and if you want to recommend something, please do, I'd like to hear your thoughts). However, I had to take into consideration the fact that the story takes place during a very cold fall, so the focus will be on coats, jackets etc.
The majority of people in Serga stick with practical clothes, usually darker and that don't stand out too much. This comes from the fact that (1) the city is polluted and full of dust, (2) you don't really want to be easily observable within the city (even if you are a civilian). It's safer not to draw much attention. Another thing is that clothes are not really gendered (not even dresses). So it's not about the actual style, but the colors and the quality of the material (that says something about your status).
Darius/Daria wears military style clothing, it's a compromise between their own style and an uniform (the CG Unit has no uniform, but they feel the need for something more official during work). They always look sharp, not a crease on their shirt (which is white and it does stand out, also a personal preference), nor a speck of dust on their shoes (incredibile given their circumstances, but everyone thinks they take all those bathroom breaks to clean them constantly). They wear a military jacket on top.
August has an entire collection of overcoats and they're very proud of them. Their color accent is usually given by their leather gloves or by a scarf (not very often). Underneath they usually wear a turtleneck. The thing that stands out is the fact that they wear heavy boots.
Abel makes statements out of his clothes. If the norm is not to stand out, he does everything to go against it (it's also kind of a power signal, he shows off his standing). He prefers neon colored clothes. When he's outside he has a very loose trenchcoat, but inside he wears a silk robe on top of his blouse.
Constance wears a burgundy wrap coat usually (from wool) and very high heels (like seriously, she's got skills to walk on those). She hates skirts for some reason. Loves patterns, particularly silly ones.
Thank you and sorry for this long, unnecessarily detailed post:))
Sister, why do you cover up so much of your body? Doesn’t it get stuffy?
“Though I might be a little envious of everyone wearing pants or easier moving clothes because it can be difficult to run sometimes due to how thick the material is.”
but long sleeves? I've always said I don't need more shirts but after getting rid of mostly long sleeves I have like... nothing for winter??
plus side is I can finally start getting myself some black long sleeves and finally say good riddance to all the pink I had
really enjoying the control I have over my clothes but I'm kinda upset it's taken over 20 years of my life to dress the way I like
really never understood why my family would get me bright colors & pastels when I've told em over & over again I like dark colors & that for some reason pink (my least fave color at this point) takes priority over purple when they KNOW purple's my fave (next to black)
which is just like so weird cuz my family's wicked accepting of everything so I don't get why it just doesn't click??
maybe cuz they've always dressed me that way to the point they can't comprehend me wearing anything else??
bought some chokers a while ago and mom was all like "oh I was into that style when I was younger we're more alike than you think ;)" like no mom just cuz you've got your nose pierced doesn't mean we're on the same fashion lvl here in fact we couldn't be more opposite
cue ~it’s not a phase mom~
ugh sorry I can’t help but to go into a long rant whenever I talk about my clothes.. it just really baffles me how my family just doesn’t get it. they SEE me wear a dress covered in a print of people skeletons and bunny skeletons and have a solid TWO halloween dresses and see me walk around in at least one of them all year round so tell me HOW do they NOT UNDERSTAND????
am I the only one here thinking that clothes as skirts, for example, can be wore by every human being? exactly like trousers or shorts or jackets? no matter their sex, their gender and their sexual orienation? the only thing that matters is their own will to wear them.
I don’t really think it’s inappropriate for a man to wear a skirt...and I don’t think this means he’s gay - beside, there’s really nothing wrong in being gay. Or being bi (I am bi) or being a! Does really some meake up, a piece of clothes, a gesture - or whatever! - make you this or that? why do we always divide into categories? eyes are such a wonderful thing nature gave us, why do we use them to blame others instead of worship all the differences making us the beautiful mistery we are?
jesus wore dresses. same did Marc Anthony. Valkyries had helmets and females dwarves are represented with a beard...
Why is it that if a person wants to dress alternatively, that our pockets need to be bottomless?!? Like... Why is everything remotely gothic/industrial/punk or mediocre edgy $50 a garment? Like what even? Denim and some band shirt isn't going to cut it for me much longer, I want to look like I give a hoot and look cute! But DAMN do clothing shops have me by the throat! These days anything with a skull on it, its price doubles. Can I just have a little bit of wiggle room?? I mean, us dirt bags barely make it by with part time work we can score because we are the weirdos, the least we could have is a cheap clothing outlet. I know it's a first world problem but... I would just like to be able to own a wardrobe I am actually comfortable, and excited to wear and have Some money left in the bank. Blehp.
