About Joaquin:
Born in Guatemala but grew up in the South Bronx in New York.
The oldest of four siblings.
Joaquin grew up in a full house, packed with family and love. While they didn’t always have the most money, he was never without, at least not in any major way that he was aware of.
New York, specifically the Bronx and Manhattan was like his personal playground. At the age of 13, when his grandfather passed away, Joaquin inherited his guitar and collection of records and cassette tapes. This was where his love for music was born.
Joaquin learned to play guitar from one of his uncles. From his aunt and uncles he learned about music from boleros to the motown jams that would play from the stoop across the street. He knew from an early age that he wanted to do was make music, to be around all of the time.
Still, he had a responsibility to do right by his family by at least going to college and finding a way to make money. He was the first in his family to attend university and decided to do so right in New York.
His academics weren’t stellar but he managed to get into City College where he got his B.A. in Music. After graduating, Joaquin took a job with a family friend at his store, not really having any career goals aside from finding a way to make music.
At the age of 26, after a lot of hustle and being run out of a lot of recording rooms, joaquin recorded his first ep which he advertised by handing them out to people out of the back of the trunk of his sisters car.
While it was a struggle at first, eventually a friend from college got the ep into the hands of the right people and by the time he turned 27, Joaquin was in the studio recording his first full length album and posing for photos to promote his very first tour that would take him up and down the east coast.
While Joaquin didn’t have much mainstream success, he had a decently sized group of dedicated fans, people who came out to his shows and got his songs played on the radio and by 29 he was able to do a cross country tour.
However it all came tumbling down at the age of thirty when his label unexpectedly dropped him, citing that he was no longer making the sales he used to make.
Heartbroken and discouraged, Joaquin used the savings he had to get the hell away from New York and embarked on a new journey.
Joaquin spent the next two years traveling abroad, getting gigs where he could, getting odd jobs and learning new skills as he went along. He had intended for his traveling to be longer but he returned home to New York after two years when his mother fell ill.
After his mother’s passing, Joaquin knew he needed to leave again but instead of running far away, he spent some time in Port St. Lucie, Florida with his brother and his wife and his nephews. After a few months with them, he ventured out on his own and that was when he found Seagrove. His first visit there, he stumbled upon the ‘coming soon’ sign for Hooked on a walk to the beach and was instantly intrigued. After finding the contact information for the owner he offered her his decent expertise with food when she mentioned having an opening for a cook at the restaurant. He was hardly a rockstar chef but he knew his way around the kitchen and he knew he could throw himself into this life the way he had his former one.
Joaquin has been in Seagrove for five years and for the most part does his best to lay low unless he’s playing a show. He can usually be found paying wherever there’s an open mic or on late nights out on his balcony. He loves food and finds great joy in knowing that people are enjoying the things he made.
He doesn’t talk much about his music career and has managed not to run into anyone yet who recognized him, sure that his old fans are far and few between. He keeps copies of his first and only album stored away in his closet.
The death of his mother shook him up in ways he couldn’t believe and because of it he felt the need to set roots somewhere different, somewhere he felt he could start over. Though he still talks to his dad almost every night as well as his siblings.
Overall though, he’s friendly and decently approachable but has the tendency to go off on tangents once people actually engage him in conversation. Especially if it’s related to music.
