āOkay. Good,ā Sofia nodded with a relieved sigh. She hated the idea of having to get her son registered. Her little boy. Her innocent little boy who wouldnāt hurt a fly. Why on earth would he need to be registered as if he was a criminal they needed to keep an eye on? She smiled softly as he insisted she wouldnāt be a painful reminder for her family.Ā āMaybe I should give them a call.ā Part of her felt bad for having to pull Mateo out of LA and the distance that created between him and Joaquinās family as well as hers.Ā āUhm,ā she took in a deep breath as she tried to formulate an answer for his question. Did she even really know how she was dealing with it? Sheād never moved to a new state before. Let alone had to arrange a whole new life in a new country. Ā āFine. I mean, Iāve settled in at work. And Mateo seems to be handling it okay. Which makes things easier. But I do miss our family and friends.ā She offered him a small smile. āBut I canāt imagine what itās been like for you. On the run. Having to keep everyone in the dark. It canāt have been easy.ā Having had the kind of childhood Sofia had, it was difficult to imagine being completely separated from those she loved.Ā
Joaquin gave her a small smile and took her hands in his.Ā āI think my mother would like that. She always loved Mateo...gave her a second chance at taking care of a child and she loved to spoil him,ā he said with a light laugh. He closed his mouth, waiting, making sure Mateo didnāt hear and crawl out of bed to find out what that noise was. His mother always resented allowing his father to have so much of an influence on him and his siblings. It pulled them apart and by the time their mother noticed, it was too late.Ā āIām sure you do. Iām so sorry this has happened, but Iām glad youāre adjusting well. Hopefully making friends...both you and Mateo.ā Joaquin let go of one of Sofiaās hands and ran his fingers through his hair.Ā āYouāre right. It hasnāt been easy. But to protect you, Iād do anything.ā He paused for a beat.Ā āYou get used to being alone a lot faster than you think and I thought Iād be alone for much longer. It was such a surprise to see that you moved here.ā He smiled again, trying to focus on something happier.Ā āDid you get the spyglass and stained glass piece I sent?ā

mrssofiavasquezā:
āOkay,ā she whispered with a nod.Ā āYeah. I get it. I donāt want them getting a hands on Mateo. I just hope things donāt escalate further. I donātā¦I canāt imagine how I could possibly explain to him why some people think heās dangerous. Heās just a kid.ā She sighed, her gaze dropping momentarily. Sheād moved so far away to keep Mateo safe. To give him a normal childhood. And now that very thing was under threat.Ā At the mention of his family, she shook her head.Ā āOnly your mother. I-I try not to intrude. I can only imagine what happened hurt them a million times more than it did me. I wouldnāt want to be a painful reminder of that.ā She offered him a sad smile.Ā āDo theyā¦Do they know youāre still alive, or?ā She hadnāt gotten the chance to learn about the logistics of his fake death since learning Joaquin was still alive.Ā
For the longest time, heād considered pulling Mateo out of school and having him be homeschooled, but Joaquin knew that wouldnāt be fair on any of them, especially their son. A part of him understood his fatherās ideology. Heād hated for Silvers to live in hiding all the time, forced to live in the shadows to avoid being experimented on or arrested or worse. Joaquin took Sofiaās hands and gave them a squeeze.Ā āItās not mandatory here, so we have some time to figure things out,ā he said.Ā āI donāt think youād be a painful reminder. If anything, I think youād be a sign of hope.ā He gave her a small smile. His mother wasnāt thrilled with him or his father and their work, but she did love Sofia and Mateo, even if they reminded her of her wayward son and husband. āNone of them know. I hadnāt spoken to Johanna and Tommy in weeks before everything happened. How are you dealing with the move from America?āĀ The two had done some traveling before, but theyād never considered moving away from the States.
mrssofiavasquezā:
āHeās upstairs in bed.ā Sofia was about to ask why heād come to check on him when Joaquin mentioned the disappearances of four more Silvers. Her hand moved to cup her mouth in shock. āOh. Wow. Thatās terrible. No, no. Iāve made sure he doesnāt. Of course, heās not too happy with it. But I think he understands why. Are you okay, though? Are you being careful? I donāt want anything happening to you either? I meanā¦you being here is already pretty risky. Not that Iām not happy to see you.ā She reached forward to cup his face.Ā āI just donāt want to lose you again. The first time was hard enough.ā The pain of not really knowing what happened was the hardest part. So if he were to disappear againā¦it would be like reliving her worst nightmare.
As she put her hands to his face, Joaquin placed his hands over hers.Ā āIām okay,ā he reassured her.Ā āIām staying under the radar. Sticking to my job at the bar. Iāve been working with Emilia Freygard. Sheās a Silver in the police department. Forensic scientist. Sheās got the same powers as Mateo, but she doesnāt use them very often,ā he added.Ā āJust make sure Mateo doesnāt use his powers and he doesnāt get hurt. If they see his blood and see itās Silver...ā He didnāt even want to talk about what could potentially happen.Ā āHere they have a strict system of registering Silvers if they find them. I know they had a system in the US, but it was corrupt and far easier to fly under the radar. Here, itās different. I donāt want Mateo to have to register and be watched his whole life.ā Joaquin couldnāt imagine what it must be like for Sofia these last few months of having to pretend like he was dead.Ā āHave you talked to my mother or my brother and sister?ā He wondered what they were doing after he and his fatherĀ ādied.ā
mrssofiavasquezā:
With Mateo safely tucked in bed, Sofia had gone back downstairs to make herself some tea. The initial taps against the window werenāt quite loud enough to be heard over the sound of the electric kettle. But when the rapping started again, she jumped at the sound. Her gaze was immediately drawn to her window where, to her shock, she saw Joaquinās face peering inside. Rushing to the back door, she quickly opened it.Ā āJoaquin! What are you doing here,ā she whispered, gesturing for him to come inside. She wrapped her cardigan tightly around her, shivering at the cold evening air. āIs everything okay?ā
"I wanted to make sure Mateo was safe,ā Joaquin said. He cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck. Heād absorbed some sunlight earlier in the day and started to burn off some of the energy, making it warmer in the house. He glowed slightly as the light was released.Ā āAt least four more Silvers have disappeared and one of them might be dead. Their deaths are different than how the other woman died. They were different ages, races, genders...no relation other than them being Silvers. I think thereās a Silver hunter in town. Has Mateo been using his powers?āĀ Of course, Joaquinās concern for Mateo also extended towards Sofia as he couldnāt bear it if something happened to her, especially if she was protecting Mateo.
@mrssofiavasquez
Joaquin snuck around the back Sofiaās house. He didnāt want to go in the front and have people see him. Most importantly, he didnāt want Mateo to see him. He still wasnāt entirely sure whether he should tell his son he was alive. For now, heād keep one foot in front of the other and focus on the issue at hand. He crept up to the back door that was by the kitchen and tapped softly on the window when he saw Sofia walking by. It was pretty late, so hopefully, Mateo would be in bed and asleep. Although, he did have a penchant for snooping around at night.Ā āSofia,ā Joaquin whispered, rapping against the window again.

ā: my museās reaction to getting a phone call from the hospital about your muse
Picking up the phone, she answered with her usual:āHello, this is Sofia Vasquez. How can I help you?ā But what came next was anything but usual. Her heart skipped a beat at the mention of her husbandās name.Ā āIā¦Is he going to be alright?ā After a pause as she listened to them explain the severity of what had happened.Ā āA-alright. I-Iāll be there as soon as I can. Thank you.ā Hanging up, she put a hand over her mouth as her mind reeled. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath. She had to keep it together. At least until she was by his side. Until she could see how bad it was.
ā: my museās letter to yours that they left after they passed away
Dear Joaquin,
So this is it. We vowed to love each other and care for each other until death do us part. And now it has. My love, please take care of Mateo and donāt ever let him forget that his mother loved him tremendously. I know this is going to be difficult. It is never easy to lose someone we love. But please donāt let this loss keep you from living. I love you and even in death, I will love you. And for that reason, I want you to do what makes you happy. I want you to be happy even in my absence. Please donāt be afraid to move on. Find love again. You deserve it. Just make sure that you and Mateo are safe, happy and well. Thatās all I ask of you. You two are my world. Please try not to miss me too much.
I love you,
Sofia
ā: my museās reaction to finding your muse bruised and beaten on their doorstep
She hadnāt been expecting any visitors. So she wasnāt sure what she was expecting when she heard the doorbell go off. But it certainly wasnāt the sight of a bruised and beaten Joaquin that greeted her when she opened the door.Ā āJoa,ā she whispered. The brunette cupped his face.Ā āWhat happened?ā Worry was written all over her face as she gently pulled him inside.Ā āTake a seat.ā She guided him towards the couch, before heading to the bathroom for the first aid kit.Ā
ā : my museās reaction to being told that your muse is missing, and presumed dead
Her breath caught in the back of her throat. Missing. Presumed dead. They were familiar words. Theyād certainly words sheād heard Joaquin use with reference to his job. But to hear those words in connection to him. To hear them, knowing they meant she had lost him. The weight of those words made it hard to breath. Hard to think. Her Joaquin was missing, presumed dead? Could she have lost the love of her life forever? Was Mateo truly going to be fatherless? With no chance of a reunion?
š (for Joaquin)
send me a šfor my muse to drunkenly confess something
Unlike other people who seemed so much fun and entertaining when they were drunk, Emma had a habit of getting emotional very quickly. She stared off into space after the two of them had finished reviewing some papers on Deborahās case. With her glass of wine in hand, Emma wasnāt considering how much sheād already drank even as she thought of all Deborahās family must have felt losing their daughter. What if it had just been because she was a Silver?
ā⦠I made a mistake,ā she murmured, putting her glass on her lap as her gaze rested absently on the folder Joaquin was reading. āI did something when I was younger and I thought I was doing good like what my birth mother did to help⦠my parents.ā She paused, feeling her throat clog up. āBut if this is how Silvers are being treated⦠What if I just helped them do experiments on innocent children? What if there are kids out there in the world because of me - suffering. And itās all becauseā¦ā She gulped and got up from the couch. Taking a deep breath and facing away from Joaquin, she tried to compose herself. āForget it - we should finish this later. You should go.ā

Emma started to throw all her hesitation to jump to conclusions about what Joaquin used to do before coming to Kingsholm as soon as he started listing really good points. The way he spoke made it clear he was confident about what he was saying so either he had some experience or was really into cop shows. But most of all, her curiousity had been piqued and she didnāt want to hold back on her questions anymore.
As soon as Joaquin admitted to having worked with investigations, Emma jumped at the chance to inquire. She smiled, now feeling good about him trusting her enough to respond honestly to that.Ā āReally?ā Her head tilted slightly.Ā āYou werenāt a bartender before coming to Kingsholm, were you?ā Excited, her smile widened and her shoulders clenched, coming higher above her shoulders like a shrug.Ā āI knew it.ā She relaxed and took a deep inhale. Emma tried to control her smile by biting at the bottom of her lips and then attempting to explain the sudden enthusiasm.Ā
āSorry,ā She said with a breathy laugh. āItās just- you were kinda sketchy from the beginning. Iām not a detective, but Iāve worked with law enforcement and forensic investigation long enough to draw my own conclusions about you. Were you a government official? Law enforcement? Private investigator? All very exciting.ā
Joaquin took a half step back at Emiliaās sudden burst of energy. He wondered how much time she spent speculating who he was and what he did before coming here. Usually, during undercover work, Joaquin was like a chameleon, but being here pretending to be some other version of himself, he just couldnāt seem to turn the cop version of him off. It was probably because he desperately missed his job and life back home and he was searching for something, anything, that resembled his life from before. Investigating a murder seemed like the go to way to do that.Ā
āSketchy?ā He furrowed his eyebrows and looked at her. Joaquin took a moment and then let out a sigh. She certainly was too smart for her own good. He hoped that him telling her all of this about himself wasnāt going to come back and bite him in the ass. And that it wasnāt going to put Emilia in any more danger than theyāre already in.Ā āHomicide detective.ā He leaned back against one of the tables again and crossed his arms over his chest.Ā āDonāt go around poking in someone elseās business too much now that we have a theory that someone inside the police is behind all of this. We donāt know whoās doing all of this, which gives them an advantage over us. I should go before everyone else gets back from lunch.ā
Oh my God! Look! He is crawling!
