headcanon prompt 001: most important person to you
The most important person in Jocelyn’s life is most definitely her sister, Patricia. Born only two years apart, the two were pretty much inseparable throughout their childhood and adolescent years. Growing up, Jocelyn idolised her older sister. She wanted to do everything that Patricia - nicknamed Pea, or Tricia - did. For the most part, Patricia liked that her sister wanted to do things with her. They did everything together, and that was how they both liked it. They played together, liked most of the same movies, the same music, were more than happy to share a bedroom in their family home...
The one thing that Patricia could do that Jocelyn could not, however, was ballet. Not only was Patricia the more girly of the two, but she also had a natural talent for it, this innate knack that let her glide through the moves like some sort of ethereal creature. Jocelyn, on the other hand... She wasn’t the worst student ever to grace the Los Angeles ballet school, but she certainly wasn’t a natural. Nothing about it came easy to her, and the longer she tried, the more frustrated she became. She quit before she even entered middle school.
It was in middle school, however, that she discovered her love for photography. Patricia was one of her first ever models. Jocelyn loved taking pictures of her sister in intricate poses, in the middle of a routine, twirling or kicking or lifting her leg above her head in an unbelievable way. So, the sisters remained close, like two peas in a pod.
It was Patricia who got Jocelyn into the band scene, too, inviting her to a show of one of her friend’s older brother’s bands. Jocelyn immediately fell in love with shooting musicians one stage, shooting the audience, capturing memories and feelings and fleeting moments. It was like magic to her, almost.
Even when Patricia went to full-time ballet school, and later became a professional ballerina with the Los Angeles ballet, the sisters remained close. It was in the corps de ballet of the Los Angeles ballet that Patricia met the man who would become her husband, Ben. Quickly, they became a trio, Patricia, Ben and Jocelyn, or as Patricia affectionately nicknamed them, “PB&J”.
Patricia and Jocelyn were each other’s number one cheerleaders. Jocelyn was at Patricia’s first ever professional ballet performance, was there for the first performance after she was promoted to soloist at age 20, and there again when she was promoted to principal dancer at 23. On the other side of the coin was Patricia, encouraging Jocelyn to pursue photography, sharing her photos wherever she could, introducing her to bands and anyone she thought could help launch Jocelyn’s career.
Though they were separated by an entire country’s worth of distance when Jocelyn moved to New York to become May Queen’s official photographer, the sisters stayed in close contact, calling and texting and later facetiming every single day. Jocelyn was Maid of Honor at her sister’s wedding in 2014, and was at the hospital when her first daughter, Angelica, was born in 2017.
More recently, though, Jocelyn’s begun to feel the distance between her and her sister more and more. Not only do they only see each other a handful of times per year, but having a family of her own on top of a busy work life made it harder and harder for Patricia to stay in touch with her sister. The two women, who had once had so much in common, now seemed to be in two completely different phases of their lives. Jocelyn was still single, partying, having one night stands, and Patricia was married with a child. Angelica - nicknamed ‘Jelly’ - has even taken Jocelyn’s place in PB&J, not that Jocelyn could ever feel jealous of her adorable two year old niece.
Still, Jocelyn is determined to stay close with her sister no matter what. Family is everything to her, and no one is closer to her in her family than Patricia.
