their type: competency kink? competency kink No, but seriously, he’s got a thing for a partner who is intelligent and skilled in whatever they choose to do. He’s got a much more fluid, hard to pin down list of likes for appearances, but he does have a definite preference for someone who takes care of themselves and cares about how they look. Lazard was silent a long moment, staring unseeingly. “When I was ten years old, someone tried to kill me. Slit my throat in an alleyway - you can barely see the mark, now, of course; extensive healings and whatnot. But at the time they told Mom I was lucky to be alive - and I was, I was so very lucky, it was as close to a miracle as anything - and they told her I’d never talk again. Or at least not coherently.”
He smiled at that, because Veld of all people knew he was more than capable of talking. “Well. You can see how that turned out.”
Of course, he was more prone to certain ailments now, but whose to say that wasn’t also from growing up beside a reactor? He didn’t care to speculate, nor to draw attention to such things, even with a friend.

Going with Lazard here... definitely. When I started playing him, I fell into the same trap that I’ve since then realized he deliberately put in place to make people underestimate him. I saw him as cunning, sure, but much softer. Not gonna lie, he was a bit of a doormat in my very first writings - not on Tumblr, but back on Google Docs in ‘12.
Since then, I’ve dug deeper into his character and really given it some thought and this guy? Born and bred in the Midgar Slums to a single mother, clawed out of the Slums and up the corporate ladder high enough to be recognized and be put in as SOLDIER’s head, competent and clever enough to manage SOLDIER, which is somewhere between trying to tame a wolf pack and herding cats, strong enough mentally and emotionally to care about his people yet still be able to send them out on missions that could definitely kill them, I mean just... this man’s got soft heart, sure, but he’s got a steel core. There’s a reason I hc he was a fighter growing up pre-ShinRa.
Even just growing up in the Slums alone... that leaves a mark on a man. So when I play him these days, I try to remember that, and give him the sharper edges he deserves. (Granted, most of my threads are either with people he considers friends or at least cares for, so that soft side is on display more often here.)
