After the fall of Ganondorf and the sealing of evil, Link returned the Master Sword to its pedestal, locking away the path between eras. He stood alone in the Temple of Time, a hero with no fanfare, no audience, and no place in the future he had saved.
Zelda, heavy with the weight of her own role, sent him back—back to a time before the ruin, before destiny demanded his sword. The world was safe. His purpose fulfilled. And yet, in the silence that followed, he found himself unneeded. A ghost of a forgotten timeline.
So he left the bustling streets of Castle Town and rode Epona through the open fields toward the only place that had ever felt like home.
Malon greeted him with the same warm smile she’d worn since childhood, though her eyes lingered longer on his worn tunic, the haunted look in his eyes. She didn’t ask where he’d been. She didn’t have to.
He stayed. First as a guest. Then as a worker. Then… something more.
Stories of the Hero of Time faded. The people of Hyrule spoke of the sages, of the Princess of Destiny, of ancient evils locked away, but not the boy in green who had wielded the blade of evil’s bane. His name was never written in books. Statues were never carved. He became a myth within a myth, and then… nothing.
But at the ranch, he lived. He and Malon wed beneath the old tree near the stables, Epona watching from the fence like a guardian spirit. There were no royal guests, no celebrations, just laughter, soft music, and vows exchanged in the twilight.
They had children. A boy first, then a girl. He taught them how to ride, how to track the stars, how to listen to the wind. And when they asked about the sword in the barn rafters, he only said, "It’s a reminder."
But sometimes, late at night, he’d take out the Ocarina of Time and play a song no one remembered anymore. Just him, and the night, and the ghosts of a life no one knew he lived.
One day, when Hyrule cries out again, a new hero will rise out of the quiet legacy left behind by a forgotten boy who once saved the world, and chose, in the end, to live.
