How often do they find themselves fighting others?
ALL THE TIME when he’s young (until he goes to jail at 31). Once he’s out, he tries to do better for Jack’s sake, plus he stops drinking...which helps a lot, but he’s still a Sullivan.
Do they regret when they strike out? Find satisfaction in it?
Not if he’s the only one affected, but when his temper meant losing a job and putting his family on the streets, he regretted it.
How quick are they to resort to violence?
Way too quick. He’s got a quicker temper than Jack does.
Is there anything that makes them snap faster?
YOU DO NOT INSULT THE IRISH.
Do they throw insults or fists first?
Fists.
Have they killed before? How did it impact them?
He accidentally killed a man in a drunken fistfight when Jack was 11, and it was the worst thing that ever happened to him. He was sentenced to 50 years in jail, which meant not being able to take care of Jack, and he blames himself for the bad things that happened to Jack as a teenager.
In his verse on jackcowboyhero, he also kills Snyder, once he found out what he did to Jack and they end up at the same prison. He has absolutely no regrets about that one, even though it meant risking the electric chair and put him in Sing Sing instead of Blackwell.
If they could kill or harm another, without repercussions, would they? Who would it be? To what extent?
Besides Snyder, who he’d want to kill no matter what, he doesn’t have anyone specific that he’d need to fight without repercussions. Of course he wishes some of his fights hadn’t effected Jack and Sadhbh, but he can’t change that now.
Do they believe it’s okay to use violence to resolve problems?
Absolutely.
Is there a line they will not cross when it comes to violence/insults?
He hadn’t MEANT to kill anyone until Snyder came along. (He’ll never hurt a woman, though, and raised Jack to believe the same.)
Do they try and justify their actions? How?
No. He’s pretty practical: if they deserved it at the time, it’s justified, and if not, he won’t search for an excuse.
Do they have rituals or other motions they go through to calm themselves following violence?
Smoke, drink a beer, kiss his wife. Not always in that order.
Do they have any sort of visceral reaction to violence?
He’s drawn to fighting, especially boxing--he wants to join in. But he won’t stand to see someone helpless being hurt.
Are there certain times, currently or in their past, when they are more prone to violence than usual?
He was a wild kid/young man, and although he tried to make a decent life for his family, it just meant fighting different people. He calms down a lot once he’s out of jail, in the verses where he gets parole--he finally realizes that he needs to be there for Jack no matter what.
Are there certain places where they regularly find themselves in trouble?
When drinking, when in large groups of Irishmen, and when he’s angry and has to confront someone.
What’s the worst situation they’ve ended up in before, due to violence?
In jail after killing the stranger.
Has anything good ever come to them from acting violently?
He’s won money in boxing matches, has protected his family, and won fame and fortune (for Hells Kitchen standards) as a young man.
Do others tend to look down upon them for their actions? Whether benign or violent in nature?
Jack sees him as a hero and role model. The newspapers definitely painted the first killing as a moral story against the evils of whiskey, but he got quite a bit of sympathy for killing Snyder.
Was violence a big part of their childhood?
He was always fighting--he grew up in a rough Irish-American neighborhood and had to be tough to survive.
Do they follow another’s teachings when it comes to their treatment of violence?
No, he’s had to make his own code as he goes along, but he tries hard to be a good father and husband.

NAME : John Michael Sullivan AGE : 40-ish (varies by verse; 20 years older than Jack). SPECIES : Human GENDER : Cis Male; he/him ORIENTATION : Straight IDENTIFIES AS: Male PROFESSION : He loves boxing the most, but he’s done a lot--factory work, construction, bartending, working at the docks, bouncing, whatever puts food on the table. In some verses he ends up building sets at Medda’s after he gets out of jail.

{ PHYSICAL ASPECTS } BODY TYPE : Stocky and muscular--broad shoulders and a barrel chest. HAIR : Sandy, going grey at the temples. EYES : Blue SKIN : Originally Irish light, underneath forty years of sun and wind exposure :p HEIGHT : 5′10″
—————————————————————————- { FAMILY } FAMILY : Catholic Father, Michael O’Sullivan, and Protestant mother, Mary Kilpatrick, who insisted that her son be raised Protestant (including dropping the “O” from his surname) in the hope that he wouldn’t be as looked down on as Catholics were at the time. When John’s nineteen, he marries Sadhbh (Sarah) Kelly, and they have Francis (Frank)--aka Jack--the next year. Sadhbh gets pregnant again four years later, and they would have had a daughter, but she and the baby both die in childbirth.
In some verses, John ends up marrying Medda, and in one of those, they have a daughter named Minnie. He also becomes a father figure to several of Jack’s friends.
SIBLINGS : None, but several uncles of various ages, some of which are more like brothers. Speed : Not fast at all :p Where Jack uses speed and agility to wear opponents down, John relies on force and simply outlasting them. In modern verses, he’ll go on jogs with Jack to build cardio...but he’s not going to move any faster than a shuffle. He likes natural, kind of muted colors that remind him of Sadhbh’s quilts and the fabrics/clothing he grew up with. SMELLS : food cooking, whiskey, night rain, the perfume Sadhbh’s former employer gave her as a wedding present that she wore on special occasions (it was a small bottle and she wanted to make it last--she ended up dying before it was empty, and John brought it with him through several moves) FOOD : John LOVES hearty food like beef stew and shepherd’s pie--he’s definitely a meat-and-potato man--but with that being said, he’ll eat pretty much anything. In modern verses he’d like having chips or popcorn while watching a movie, and he’d carry snacks like beef jerky or apples to work. DRINKS : Before going to jail, he liked beer and whiskey, but after that he avoids alcohol. He drinks coffee in the mornings and throughout cold days, water and Gatorade when he’s working out, and he and Jack both love milk and Coke (which they drink out of the carton/bottle too often. Whoops.) the chosen one is most commonly used to symbolize the light side, and the heart of the story. unlike the warrior, they barely ever choose to fight on the front lines of a battle. although they will stand up for what they believe in, they do it in a way that is diplomatic, so that they don’t create more conflict than there already is. they do not feel the need to be credited in their achievements and victories, and would rather have their confidantes and comrades have the eternal glory and spotlight. they are content with the happiness of those they care about, and place friendship over all else. the chosen one is always picked for the role, hence the name. their fate was placed upon them from birth, and due to their hero complex, and need to help the meek, they follow instructions, and do what needs to be done.

Was your father a good man?
Yes.
I mean, sure, he’s messed up a few times, but nobody’s perfect. He did the best he could, raisin’ me without Ma, an’ I never wanted for anythin’, even when we didn’t have a place to live or he didn’t have a job. Livin’ with him was always a big adventure, an’ as long as we had each other an’ stories to tell, we were gonna be fine.
It was hard when he went to jail. But I know he didn’t mean to kill that guy, an’ he for sure didn’t mean to leave me, an’ even though it hurt when he wouldn’t let me come see him, he was tryin’ to do what he thought was best. I understand that now, more’n I used to.
So, yeah, he’s a real good man.
