I was going through my notes the other day and came across a phrase that I hadn’t paid much attention to at first, but now, after rereading it, I find it so representative of Toni and Port’s relationship, in particular of Port’s (conflicting) feelings for him.
When you look at all the other personifications, Toni and Port’s romance isn’t extraordinary by any means. Their distance is an objective reality that is shared with everyone else. To love as a nation means to love from afar.
And while I do believe that distance makes the heart grow fonder, there’s something to be said about loving someone who becomes almost synonymous with home while you’re on your self-imposed exile in the name of spice trade.
An “exile’s idealization of home” is exactly how I see Port think about Toni, especially during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.
Everything that comes with that idealization - “the nostalgia for past pleasures, the sense of time passing to little purpose (because you’re anywhere but home), the longing” - is pure, undiluted SpaPort.
As for the last part, I feel like comparing a nation loving another nation to having a death wish is already an established truth in the fandom. Port sees his fear of death in Toni, because loving him means putting his own survival on the line. There are many examples of personifications sacrificing themselves to “make way” for their loved ones.
And yet, Port can’t help but love and long for Toni like an exiled person loves and longs for home.
For some reason, today was an Arabic poetry kind of day.
And a SpaPort kind of day.
Here are a few poems by Nizar Qabbani and Antara Ibn Shaddad that remind me of them.
There’s this new trending audio on TikTok that goes:
“I got the tiddies, she got the ass. Together? Whah! Bad bitches.”
And every time I hear it, I imagine Port going “I got the tiddies” then gesticulating at Toni and saying “he got the ass”.
At “whah!”, Toni “bum bumps” Port’s chest.
Bad bitches indeed.
As a side note, a few days ago I found a video on Tiktok about lunares (moles). According to Mexican belief, the position of one’s mole can indicate certain supernatural abilities. 👀
A person who has moles near the nose can smell spirits. A person who has moles around the ears can hear spirits and a person who has moles near the eyes can see spirits.
What if Port can see spirits? He’d seize every opportunity to scare the living daylights out of Toni. 😅
Plant personality quiz
Chamomile: You Are: Easy-going, friendly and well liked, you’ve got a gentle and sweet nature and a calming presence that puts others at ease. Your sensitivity to others may cause you to take on too much of other people’s feelings, though, and you may even be prone to worry.
Ginger: You Are: Spirited. A feisty and fiery companion, quick with an opinion, a laugh or an idea. Warm, friendly and inviting, you never allow an awkward moment to pass. In fact, even cold and distant people warm up to you more quickly than others. Negative experiences or too much indulgence, however, can send you into a bit of a tailspin, and when hurt you may become quite cold and distant. Ginger people do best when their natural warmth and affection is flowing freely, giving them easy access to their love of life.
Slippery elm: You Are: Let’s just say you’re a vocal person. Sure, that might mean you’re chatty. But it also means you’re the one humming in the hallway, singing in the shower, speaking your mind, standing up and shouting if need be to get yourself heard. You’ve got a voice and you know how to use it. Inclined to speak up for the voiceless, defend the defenseless or simply bring joy to the joyless, you may have a tendency to overuse your voice.
