I’m a healer main on Siren and I am absolutely terrified of tanking. I just got to lvl 52 PLD and I’m deathly afraid of those things (healers rescuing into mobs-can’t understand why anyone would do such a horrible thing, dps running ahead-that happens quite a bit, people rage quitting because of small pulls). Though I must say, tanks quitting or continuing to pull the whole floor even though I asked them not to is a common occurrence...

:/ yeah I dont understand it either, if the healer is asking, it means they know their own limitations and what they can handle. Or maybe they're too sick to handle a large pull and just want a nice and relaxing run.

Honestly, small pulls dont take that long. And if you dont have the time, then dont que and do it when you do have time.

(Also trying to answer in mobile sucks, it posts without an answer if you're not careful XD)

I have to get this out because I’m starting to get annoyed, frustrated, and deeply depressed. Read more due to length.

But who cares if a tank makes a mistake, who cares if people make mistakes? We’re HUMAN, we all make mistakes. Why would you yell at someone for one simple mistake or if it’s not up to “your” extremely high and mighty standards or part of the meta. Who cares if they’re not DPSing as high as “you” like. Who cares if it’s not going as fast as “You” like. We’re still clearing these damn dungeons and raids aren’t we?

Especially if you’re with PuGs, expect different play styles. If you don’t like that, then clearly state what you want, so we know which Party Finder to avoid.

At the same time, I have to let you guys know. Don’t let one bad experience ruin your fun of something you enjoy. Block these people, leave if you have to. There’s no shame in leaving and not taking their abuse. Ignore them too, because at the end. You love what you do, you’re doing something you love. DO NOT LET SOMEONE ELSE RUIN YOUR FUN, DON’T LET THEM TAKE AWAY SOMETHING YOU LOVE.

Because you’re just letting them win.

I know it’s easier said than done, but as Tanks and as Healers, we literally have to have tough skin sadly. So that’s why, have patience and have kindness. We have one of the hardest jobs out there.

And to the people yelling at the tanks and healers (Especially if you’re a DPS), if you’re going to scream, curse, and say all kinds of abusive things.

Anyways, I just had to let this out. I’ve been noticed this trend lately where people stopped playing as a healer or a tank especially all because of one bad experience and keep reliving that same experience.

And hey think of it this way, you’re the tank. If you don’t like their attitude, leave. Let’s see how long it’ll take before they find a brand new tank. Tanks are super rare, like extremely rare.

This got super long... I’ve just been holding a lot back and needed to let this out.

Maybe I’m just too sensitive or maybe I’m just looking through the world through rose colored glasses too much.

does tanking anxiety ever leave? i’ve started playing tank and i keep on freaking out and messing up when something doesn’t go to plan and on dungeons i’ve have no problems in i usually get no commendations. i’ve always thought my anxiety would leave after a month of playing tank but it’s just not leaving :’(

It varies from person to person. It also depends on if you’re tanking with a good friend or not. In blade’s case, he was able to get over his tanking anxieties fast especially after what I put him through to become the tank he is. He also went through years of customer service and retail… I think he’s desensitized.

In my case I have to run with a friend or be tanking something I know very well, and trust the people will be kind. Cause if one small thing goes wrong, I suffer anxieties and panic attacks, because I get so startled that I flounder and panic and suddenly forget everything I learned, because now I’m just thinking, “Oh my God they’re going to yell at me. Please don’t yell at me, I’m fragile.” At that point I’m shaking so badly I just leave because I can’t function anymore.

But that’s a severe case cause I suffer through some severe anxieties and panic attacks half the time if I’m alone. That’s why I have to run with a friend or someone I know will not judge me and instead laugh with me at my stupid mistakes.

Speaking from my own expierence, I’m desensitized. But I found a tank I loved more than anything, which made it easy for me to adjust to my anxiety problems.

Of course I do still get stupid anxious and nervous when running something new. Especially things like Extreme primals, so in a sense it does and doesn’t go away I suppose. I’m not a nervous wreck in regular 4-man dungeons I’m familiar with, but my anxiety spikes through the roof on new content.

As Rose mentioned though, you can always try running with friends until you’re more comfortable and able to predict how something might go sideways. All you can do is find what works the best for you. And if someone doesn’t like it and says it rudely, leave. It’s not up to you to live up to their standards.

I really need an explanation on why I keep getting tanks in 24-mans who constantly provoke grief? Like I’ve been tanking since heavensward and tbh I haven’t seen stuff like this until Stromblood dropped. Like did a YouTuber or Redditor make this popular or something?? Idek.

I never understand why tanks have this need to have a war with each other on who is the MT. Especially cause it can cause a serious wipe in the beginning since they’re too busy trying to provoke each other that it will sometimes cleave the whole entire raid.

And if someone did say something, they were likely joking, but some people decided to take it way too seriously.

Used to be a tank and ffxiv was my first ever online game. But it quickly got bad bc ppl gave me shit to the point I said fuck tank I'm dps now. Happier with the choice tho I do miss tanking sometimes

I’m putting it under a read more because this got long, I get extremely empathetic and passionate. >x>;;; *nervous laughter*

Yes, sadly a lot of players now a days in FFXIV can be bad for that. It’s like they forget they used to be new once too. I remember being a new tank and getting so much support, but then when I decided to try tanking a new tank, holy crap were people awful. They would actively try to rip hate by going gungho on the monsters or attacking something you’re not attacking.

And if you can’t meet their expectations, you’re the bane of their existence and curse out your very name or get really vile and nasty. Even Blade tried Paladin on a new character once (before they gave shield oath out at 30, this was when it was at 45 I think), and he struggled to keep hate cause they were using blood for blood, raging strike, or anything to actively rip hate at the time. Even after he told them he was “New” hoping they’d ease up.

Nope, as soon as he couldn’t keep up, they ripped into him and cussed him out, told him he should quit tanking, and even told him “I hope you get raped.” and disgusting shit like that (I have seen the chat logs). After that he refused to touch Paladin in that character and just went for it on his other character where it was already maxed out. Or if he does, I’m the one healing him because he trusts I won’t heal toxic DPS like that and if they kick us, oh well. Easy que back in with friendlier people.

Just like with healers, you have to have bones of steel and skin made of steel as well to be able to handle these kind of treatments. It’d be nice if people could be understanding and play cooperatively, but half the time we can’t get that. People are competitive and selfish, and they expect people to be able to play up to their expectations.

That’s why we actively tell people to hit us up in game, on tumblr, hell I’ll even give you my personal discord if you want to hit us up a lot easier somehow. We don’t want to see people quit or miss any class they want to play, we don’t want to see people blocked from trying something new because of toxic players. Blade will be there to give out advice while I’ll be that healer who will happily help out and not be running ahead pulling for you.

I also promise not to do what I did to Blade (Granted he said because of what I did, he turned out into an really good tank to begin with, but that’s cause of his play style).

Though I’m glad you still found happiness in your choice, and I’m sorry about the people who gave you shit and chased you off tanking.
