... hey guys...
The whole "I'll suck it up and only take a little Ibuprofen if my leg's half sawed off." thing was fairly common on my mother's side of the family, men and women alike. The men were more noticeably proud of it, though, and probably because they were taught to be that way. It was very much a cultural thing.
My grandfather struggled with COPD the last two decades of his life, and pushed himself too hard with one last bout of pneumonia. He essentially suffocated himself to death because he wouldn't go to the hospital until it was too late. My grandmother ignored the warning signs of her cancer's re-emergence, and by the time we convinced her to be checked out, her intestines were riddled with tumors. She more or less starved to death because of the damage they'd done. My aunt ignored her stress level and subsequent weight gain until she had a massive heart attack at 56 and passed. She'd prided herself on being just like her father (my grandfather), sucking it up, to the point where she'd be openly hostile to anyone who questioned her about it.
Yes, suffering in silence until it turns fatal is an unfortunate proud family tradition.
So, I think I can be excused for finding a silly place to tongue-in-cheek, humorously admit I've probably picked up the same tendency, though more out of not wanting to burden anyone than out of pride. There's no hope of controlling or mitigating what we won't acknowledge about ourselves after all...
Laura takes 'talk shit, get hit' very seriously. Specifically when said shit is about her friends.
