uncommon character development for vegeta: 20 & 30
Uncommon Character Development Questions || accepting!
20. If your character was allowed to murder one person without any consequences, who would that person be and why?
Frieza. No, it doesn’t matter at what point in his life we’re talking about, it doesn’t matter if he’s already dead - he wants to do it himself. He is grudgingly grateful that Goku Kakarot did, at least it was a Saiyan, and all the better that his son finished him off, but... he really, really wanted to have done so himself. And if given a chance, he’d do it in a heartbeat. No hesitation.
30. Finally; if your character was forced to eat one thing for the rest of their life, what would they choose and why?
That’s a hard call for a man who will eat (nearly) anything, but I’m going to go with steak - the rarer the better. Vegeta is a carnivore at heart and would be happiest satisfying that.
Vegeta was born as the Prince of Saiyans, heir to the throne of Planet Vegeta in age 732, during the reign of the Cold Empire. Forced into Frieza’s service at a young age, he was kept in line with the threat that his father would be killed if he ever disobeyed - likewise, a threat that Vegeta would be killed kept his father in line for several years before he tried to stage an uprising. It ended not only with the death of the king, but the destruction of the Saiyans’ home planet.
Unaware that Frieza had been the cause of the Saiyan genocide, Vegeta was orphaned under his control, one more noble taken from his home to be a jewel in Frieza’s court. Due to his immense power even as a child, Vegeta was used in clearing planets for the planet trade that Frieza ran. His only Saiyan companions - and the only survivors he was aware of - were Nappa, his childhood bodyguard, and Raditz, a Second Class Saiyan who had been assigned to them.
Despite such a small circle, Vegeta carried himself with pride in all he knew of Saiyan tradition and his role as the prince. He quickly outstripped both Raditz and Nappa in power, however, and as he continued to grow up under Frieza’s cruel regime he lost a great deal of respect for the older Saiyans, viewing them as lesser due to being less powerful than he was. In a mix of earned pride and sheer defiance, he clung to his title and to the perception that he would be able to redeem the Saiyans, and would one day become a legendary Super Saiyan and defeat Frieza.
His perspective was strongly challenged when faced with Raditz’s brother, an Earth-raised Saiyan who insisted on going by the name Goku. Goku was not only able to defeat him when they first clashed on earth, but would continue to prove himself a superior fighter when they both traveled to Namek in a race to get their Dragon Balls. Vegeta would face his first death there, at Frieza’s hands, but not before desperately entrusting the task of killing the tyrant to the last remaining pureblooded Saiyan - Goku.
Despite knowing of the Dragonballs, Vegeta certainly didn’t expect to be brought back to life - indeed, it was more an accidental benefit of the wording of the wish. However, he ended up stranded on Earth, taken in by Bulma. He continued to train furiously in an attempt to catch up to Goku, who would remain his rival throughout his life.
During his time on earth, there was a series of villains to challenge them both - Frieza returned with his father, only to be defeated by a mysterious youth who brought news of a future enemy. His apparent ability to turn into a Super Saiyan was something that disturbed Vegeta greatly - between his human coloring and the lack of potential parents, he denied that it could be possible.
Only later, once he and Bulma had grown closer and had a son was it revealed that the youth was indeed Trunks from the future. And while initially Vegeta was harsh and unfeeling towards him, when he lost him in battle it sparked protective instincts he hadn’t known he had.
Losing Goku in the same battle took a lot of the fight out of Vegeta. He continued to train, but there was seven years of relative peace where the only enemy he had was himself. He attempted to become a better father figure to young Trunks, the grief and loss he’d felt at losing Mirai Trunks never far from the back of his mind. He and Bulma were too much alike not to quarrel regularly, but there was an undeniable bond between them, even if he did occasionally take her for granted.
Another enemy made itself known after so much peace, appearing just as Goku returned to life for a day. This battle would be one of Vegeta’s hardest, and yet also represent the most personal growth.
While he allowed the wizard Babidi to possess him, he accepted the power boost and shook off the impulse to follow his orders, merely using the new strength to fight Goku. Unfortunately, the battle was cut short as he had to face Majin Buu, a battle that would lead to his ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to protect his few loved ones - his small family, and even his rival. But his death was in vain, as Buu came back to life.
Eventually, with Earth’s heroes taken down one after the other, Vegeta was allowed out of the afterlife to join Goku in fighting Majin Buu. Filled with the grief of losing his young son and mate, Vegeta finally worked cooperatively with Goku, and while it was a long, difficult fight, they were ultimately victorious with Goku striking the killing blow.
Unexpectedly brought back to life once more, Vegeta finds himself in a position of clarity. He admits - if only to himself - that Goku is the superior fighter. He will consider him a rival for the rest of his life, but the burning need to be better has finally faded. His actions have damaged several relationships, but after losing his family he is ready to fight to keep them in his life. For once, there is something more important than being the strongest.
Description:
Standing at 5′5 (well over 6′ if you were to count his hair), Vegeta is a leaner, more compact man than most of the hulking figures the Saiyan race produced, in part stunted from his years in Frieza’s service. Black hair comes up in the trademark royal flame from a sharp widow’s peak and stern brows sit low over cunning onyx eyes. While he eventually wears some casual earth clothing, he’s most comfortable in a variety of close fitting training clothes in blue, white and gold.
