6, 10 & 16 for all the adults. curious about how these could manifest in their relationships
what do you think their zodiac sign would be?
eddie, my first instinct is virgo.
aniyah, gemini.
penny, taurus.
jordyn, pisces.
what kind of childhood did they have?
eddie is the youngest of three children (two older sisters that he doesn't speak to, they're just not close) raised by a single mother (stopped speaking to him over his desire to be polygamous). he's met his dad a handful of times and didn't like what he encountered - eddie couldn't tell you if that man is dead or alive. he became "man of the house" at a young age, and the brokenness of his own immediate family is what led him to the desire to have his own large, happy family. however, eddie's mom actively derided therapy for a lot of his childhood and instead encouraged him to take all his troubles to church without discernment.
aniyah is a middle child, raised by two parents who were married right up until she and eddie started dating. her family was fundie-lite, with plenty of purity culture guilt, performative modesty, but hey, she was still allowed to go to college (chose not to), opt to set her own dating OR courtship standards (made eddie do that), and her parents actively told her to wait until she was REALLY ready to be married, not just until she wanted to have sex (didn't listen).
penny is an only child, raised by two parents. she kind of fell into the role of "little adult" and enjoyed a very privileged life of travelling and having all her expensive hobby whims fulfilled, but also felt a great deal of emotional distance between herself and her parents. even through becoming semi-famous and having all the material things she could want, she was always searching for something to fill the void. by the time she first met eddie, marriage and children was one of the last things she could think of the fill that void.
jordyn is the oldest of seven daughters, raised by two parents in a full on fundie house. jordyn was raised for marriage and childbearing, and really only found value and praise when she did things for others and agreed well with the will of others. if you ask her, she'll say she had a happy childhood and honestly, it's true -- she's known nothing different, her parents were never (outright and intentionally) abusive or malicious, and the only dream for her life so far is being fulfilled.
fight or flight (i'm also adding freeze or fawn)?
eddie, a mix of fight and fawn. eddie's mom had narcissistic tendencies, so eddie definitely got into the pattern of being the validating, comforting presence, in contrast to his sisters who would fight with her. however, if fawning doesn't work out, he switches quickly to anger to reassert control of the situation.
aniyah, fight. she is a classic passive aggressive to straight up aggressive, big gestures to draw attention and seize control middle child (author says this knowing full well that she is also this way). if she can't yell/glare her way out of the situation, she'll storm out and make a big scene.
penny, freeze. in her home, emotions just...were not a thing. you don't address it, nobody raises their voice or even speaks for hours, then you offer gifts/dinner out/planning the next expensive ski trip to mt. komorebi or aspen together so everyone can forget any of that ever happened.
jordyn, fawn. it's her fault, she's sorry, she should've reminded you/listened better/etc.. she offers herself up as the one at fault to excess until the other person is neutralized, then is eager to offer service/repair measures even at the cost of her own feelings.
(this was SO much fun to write y'all)
