It might've technically still been the morning, but Kit always found that a bit of alcohol worked wonders for relaxation and so, she'd put two quarter bottles of pre-chilled champagne in her stupidly large handbag that morning. As soon as she was sure she wasn't being observed, she popped one open discreetly and poured some into the glasses of orange juice they were served with their breakfast items while Eddie had been speaking, looking at him as if nothing untoward (or possibly even mildly illegal) was happening. Then she answered him, again completely unfazed and au-fait by what she'd just done. "Ooh I think let's just wait and see how we feel, maybe? We might not want too much after a day of travelling". She picked up her glass to take a hearty sip. "That is really good juice by the way".
"You know, I never thought to ask if you were okay with us sharing a room or if you would've preferred one of your own. I haven't been too presumptive on that front, have I?".
Eddie's lips twitched with amusement as he lifted his cup and took a drink of the Bucks Fizz that Kit had made. "It is really excellent juice," he replied as he took another drink, letting the cool liquid soothe any lingering nerves.
Kit's question took him by surprise and he couldn't help the little laugh that escaped his lips. "I am very alright with us sharing a room," he assured her, his eyes sparkling maybe just a little more than they had been. "From what I've seen in those pictures the bed is big enough that we could probably both sleep like starfish and not get near each other!" His eyebrows waggled as he joked, though he was defintiely happy the decision had been taken out of his hands as he would have probably booked two rooms so that he didn't appear to assume even though he would really only want to use one.
The train rattled on and breakfast was cleared away and Eddie pulled out his sketch pad. "There's still a lot of the journey to go, would you mind if I drew you? I didn't want to bring my laptop because I know I'd end up working but I thought some drawings would pass the time nicely."
And so it was that on the fifth of the next month, they took their seats on the train due to leave King's Cross at 9:30 that morning. They'd already had a muffin and a couple of coffees in the 1st class lounge, but a full breakfast was going to be served once they were moving and Kit was already anticipating it. She'd been up since 5am, making sure she had everything packed and that she looked her best for Eddie. Right now, she was sat across from him, already beaming a smile.
"We arrive just before twenty to two, and check in at the hotel at two......it's literally at the gates of the Castle so, very evocative and plenty to look at and a good base for all the exploring you're going to lead us on. Plus, a huge four poster bed to rest our weary bones after all the expeditions" she told him, only then sliding across her phone with the website of the place they were going to stay at already opened.
Eddie settled into the 1st class seat, enjoying the space it provided and the access to the lounge which had been a novel treat. The previous week in particular had been a whirlwind of site visits and phone calls tying up loose ends and making sure people were updated on project progress before he left for a week. He was very ready to spend some much longed for time with Kit but his mind had not quite slowed down enough to switch off from work entirely so the train journey was, he hoped going to work wonders for getting him into holiday mode.
He took Kit's phone to scroll through the images of the hotel, pursing his lips as he took in the details. "It looks very regal, majestic and magnificent," he smiled as he passed the phone back. "I can honestly say I have never stayed in a room that had it's own tapestries. I wonder how old they are, or if indeed they are original." He reached out and placed his hand over Kit's lightly, "Are you planning to eat in the hotel restaurant tonight or will we find somewhere else to dine? I am quite sure there are plenty or restaurants and pubs a short walk along the Royal Mile."
While some might find his dedication to duty problematic, Kit couldn't given it was that very thing that had resulted in her having such a beautiful, not to mention functional kitchen. Plus her own work ethic was just as steadfast, as she never enjoyed letting clients down. "The fifth works perfectly, as a matter of fact. I'll see to the hotel and train bookings - you work on all the marvellous places you're going to show me in the daytimes". As for the nights, she'd already got an idea how most of those would be spent - meals at fabulous restaurants, maybe even some clubs, or possibly just staying in their room after too much walking that day, ordering from room service.....cuddling up together on a huge, comfy bed. It would be delightful.
"So we're all in agreement then? We're going?".
Eddie gave a soft smile as he opened his notes app and made a note to apply for leave for that week. "I'll get that booked in," he agreed, his mind already wandering to where they should visit. He could picture it already walking down the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace at the bottom and all the little stores and closes to visit on the way. One day they could go down to visit the Shore in Leith, maybe Deans Village or even go further to some of the smaller towns like Haddington or Linlithgow with their quaint buildings and endless history.
Eddie laughed heartily at her question, "Oh we are most definitely in agreement. Our first holiday together and what a place to start." He lifted her hand to his lips, kissing it gently, "I can't wait."
Usually, Kit hated muttering. People who muttered, she believed, were annoying. Yet somehow, Eddie made it ridiculously endearing and she found herself staring at him even harder as he worked through all the upcoming commitments he had, eyebrows rising and falling in accordance with the appointments as her smile grew. And when he eventually drew breath and looked up at her, she knew she was full on grinning.
"I mean now I'm scared that the London skyline will forever be harmed if I keep you away too long!" she quipped, leaning in conspiratorily as she added "Can the pigeons spare you for a full week? That way we can see all the sights and still, have plenty of time to.......ourselves too".
Eddie's mind was on projects so when Kit spoke about the London skyine it took him a moment to catch on. He chuckled before sighing dramatically, "I'm not sure how the pigeons will fair without my exacting standards for a week....although I do recall some rather stunning pigeons in Edinburgh that rather made me laugh the last time I visited so I will have to introduce them to you and see if you find them as much fun as I did!" His gaze returned to his diary, "For a week I'm looking at next month. I'm sorry but I have too many projects at final snagging stages to go before the....5th." He smiled apologetically, "How is your diary looking?"
There was something very captivating about seeing the glint in Eddie's eyes as he tenderly kissed the knuckles of her fingers. Clearly he was just as excited at this prospect as she was and in Kit's head, she was already making plans to check out train timetables and hotel availability. Unless renting a whole house would work better for them, though that option would most likely take them out of the city centre......She was jumping the gun again, and also not including Eddie into this highly important point of discussion. So while he was still busy with that one hand of hers, she used the other one to access the diary app on her phone. "We need to figure out when we can both do this, so that I can start making arrangements. I have a massive need to see you in looking at the buildings there, maybe also in a kilt.....".
Eddie laughed heartily at her words and actions. "So bossy," he teased as he noticed her phone in her hand and already scanning dates. "Buildings I can do however I'm not sure I quite have the legs for a kilt," he added with a chuckle as he let go of her hand and reached for his own phone. Opening the diary app he began muttering, "I have Williamson until Tuesday then that weekend I need to be available for snagging at Berkleys....hmmm, I have most weekends next month free but it depends on when you want to leave because two Fridays I need to be at the new Hilton site and then Mondays are tricky too. How long are you thinking we go for?"
"I think that apart from home and London, my favourite place in the whole of the UK.....is Edinburgh" she announced. "Great museums and art galleries, fabulous restaurants, friendly people, fantastic nightlife. And the budildings there I know you must love too, yes?". Surely Eddie had to have been there? She imagined that Architecture Student's were sent there as a matter of routine to stare at the Parliament Building, St Giles Cathedral and anything on Victoria Street.
"Not to mention the train ride to it is a joy in and of itself. A long haul certainly, but the scenery on the East Coast route once you reach Nortumberland! Just perfection".
Eddie's eyes lit up at the mention of Edinburgh. "I have been twice and neither time has been long enough," Eddie remarked. "It's a stunning city that I don't think I could ever tire of." He could picture it all so clearly, the train ride, the hotel room looking out over the Royal Mile or perhaps one with a view over to the castle, walking hand in hand through Princes Street Gardens or by the river down to Deans Village. "I think we may have decided on our first adventure together," he exclaimed as he lifted Kit's hand to his lips, the sparkle in his eyes dancing.
Kit could feel her cheek heat up a little, right where his lips had made contact. Eddie always seemed to cause such strange reactions in her - blushing, smiling like an idiot, giggling even. And right now there were plans, actual plans being formed in her head.
"Ooooh, well Bangkok obviously. Koh Samui for the beaches, See the historical ruins and the museums of Sukhothai. And then there would be the temples of Chiang Mai........". She'd done a lot of reading about Thailand, a lot of prospective itinerary making over the years. All she'd needed was someone else as into the idea of going there as she was.
"And who knows......maybe a quick weekend in Tokyo on the way how from all that, wouldn't be a bad idea either, hmm?".
Eddie's eyes widened subtly in surprise as Kit started to list places. "You've really thought about this," he teased gently. "I only know a few places and even then I guess I had never really thought about it as more than a distant dream to visit them." He reached for Kit's hand, lifting it to his lips in a soft kiss, "But now I think I had better start reading up properly on Thailand and Tokyo. I need to keep up with your knowledge." His smile crinkled the corners of his eyes as he placed her hand down gently before asking, "And what about closer to home, maybe somewhere for a long weekend that could be achieveable first. Where would you like to visit?"
(Continued from here for @itsrogersandco)
"I been to Japan a few times with Richard, back when I was a 'Corporate Wife. But they were work-related trips so, all I got to see were the insides of office buildings, some restaurants, a Dohyo.......unfortunately no temples were visited at all. Also I would dearly love to visit Thailand. Maybe, if you and I carry on enjoy speding time together, we can discuss taking a trip to get that ticked off for you?".
That was very forward of her, Kit realised. But fortune favoured the bold, it was said. And it never hurt to make a suggestion.
Eddie listened with interest, ready to ask questions but it seemed that Kit had missed most of the Japanese style that Eddie was interested in seeing too. His heart clenched as she mentioned them going to Thailand together, the idea of travelling together, seeing new buildings and eating authentic cuisine all just sounded like a dream. He leaned in and kissed her cheek, "I'll hold you to that." Sitting back with a rather smug smile he asked, "Where would you like to visit? If you could go anywhere?"
"Then those people......" she began, smiling softly in the way only Eddie even seemed to illicit from her. ".......are obviously idiots. I happen to be magnificently intelligent, which is why I'm fascinated by you". Kit's eyebrows rose a little on that last word, just to prove the point. "So let me ask you, if you could go anywhere in the world to look at architecture you'd never seen before, where would it be?".
Eddie's laugh comes soft and gentle as his hand brushes lightly against hers in a silent thanks. "You are indeed magnificent and intelligent and fascinating," he grins, ignoring the actual meaning of her words. The question makes him pause and he leans back, closing his eyes for a moment as he considers his answer. "I think it would have to be somewhere like Thailand or Japan. Somewhere in total contrast to England. I think seeing all the temples would be very interesting."
(closed teeny starter for @itsrogersandco)
"I have to admit, when you talk about architecture, I get quite lost - not because it's boring or anything. It's just that you're so passionate about it, you speak so eloquently, so fervent and descriptively.......I'd never thought of bricks, concrete, wood, steel and glass in the way you describe them. It's almost like literature - like Jane Austen, or maybe even Shakespeare!".
Eddie's cheeks take on a soft rose as he tries not to smile too brightly at the comment. "I certainly don't think I compare to Austen or Shakespeare," he protests without much conviction as he lays his tablet down. "I just, I get a little carried away with the structures and honestly, I'm excited to have someone interested in hearing it. Most people find me really quite boring."
"Of course I'll join you. Can't usher in the new year sober, mi amor," they teased with a kiss to her cheek. And they happily obliged, downing their first drink with ease before following with a shot and a drink they were sipping much more slowly as the night progressed. They wanted to steady themselves and they still had to take some photos.
Noel was flowing through the night taking photos and watching Isabella enjoy herself amongst the crowd. It made thier heart feel warm, to be in the same space with her to know that no matter what they would be going home together at the end of the night. Noel was in love, it was evident to anyone who talked to them about their partner but it was moments like these that Noel realized it more.
They had stepped away only for a moment to switch out their camera's battery and as they returned to the party and looked around, their heart sinking when they caught sight of who Isabella was talking to. "Oh fuck," they mumbled, trying not to look panicked as they slowly made their way through the crowd, clutching the camera by their side. As they got close they could hear the other person introducing themselves.
"Oh I know who you are," she replied to Isabella and looked her over. "I'm sure Noe has told you about me. I'm Eve." Noel had told Isabella about their ex but hadn't gone into more detail than it was a bad breakup. And Eve was as jealous as they came. Eve turned her head and smiled as she saw Noel near. "Well don't you look handsome," she said, her tone sweeter than it had been with Isabella but Noel went to Isabella's side, slid their arm around her waist and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Amor, I..see you've met Eve." They turned to her and gave her a slight nod. "Happy New Year-Eve," they told her with a small laugh, hoping to break the tension. "What were you two talking about?"
Isabella felt as if cold water had been poured right down her spine as the woman spoke. It was frightening how quickly the lawyer's demeanor jumped into defense mode but the tone of the stranger's voice, her words 'I know who you are' was chilling but as they continued, mentioning Noel, Isabella's eyes narrowed. Her mind was calculating in overdrive how to respond. This was not someone she had met not one of Noel's good friends who had all welcomed her warmly. Also she was certain she had never heard Noel mention an Eve before. Isabella was not one for missing or forgetting details. She had built her reputation on it.
Tipping her head slightly she took a moment to look the woman over, leaving the insinuation of their words hanging for a moment. Isabella placed the vodka bottle back down and smiled at Eve but this smile was practised, calculated and professional. "It's a pleasure to meet you Eve. Are you enjoying the party?"
Turning her head as she heard Eve address Noel, Isabella stood taller as she watched her partner approach. There was a tension to her body that had not been there before as Noel's hand slid around her waist. At Noel's question Isabella gave the same cool, professional smile rather than her usual warm one. "Oh we were just getting aquainted. Eve was just telling me how well she knows you." Her smile tightened, "It's almost a shame you arrived too early for me to really hear much gossip about your ....relationship." Turning back to Eve she asked, "How long is it since you saw each other?"
Amelia's fingers moved across the controller without concious thought as she pulled up the number 1 movie and stuck it on. It was pretty obvious that neither of them cared what was on, it was background noise to their thinking but Amelia was still confused over where the tension had come from. She closed her eyes and tried to replay everything that had been said since Caroline arrived, rubbing rough fingers over her eyes as it that would help her see where the issue came from.
After about 30 minutes she sat up straight and paused the movie. "No!," she demanded. "I want to know what I did wrong and you at least owe me that. I can't fix anything if I don't know why you are upset...and don't even try to say you aren't!"
Caroline was barely watching the movie, if anything she was on the verge of dozing off which was preferable to the constantly replaying the whole evening over and over in her mind which was what she had been doing. At Amelia's outburst she sighed deeply and pulled herself up to sitting. Her heart tugged as she saw the clear distress on her girlfriend's face but she also knew perfectly well that the manager didn't understand the issue with what she did.
"Look it's...." she began, before struggling to phrase the issue. "It's just the way you dismiss things so.....flippantly." She sat up completely, her hands resting on her knees as she tried to articulate why this was an issue. "I know you like expensive stuff but that handbag cost me a lot of money and I had to save up to get you it and then you....you make a snide comment about it at least being real. It was really hurtful. I don't have the money to splash around on designer gear but I know you wanted it and I wanted to get it for you but yeah, the dig at me buying fake goods to have the look or whatever the remark was supposed to be getting at was really uncalled for. You sounded so ungrateful and entitled." Caroline stopped, on one hand feeling better for having expressed how she felt but also feeling like a bitch for twisting the knife even further.
Amelia slowly slid closer to the edge of the couch as the silence between them dragged on. Her heart was thumping loudly and her eyes were wide and watching as Caroline seeemed to go through different emotions. A fear gripped her that she really wasn't used to. Her girlfriend was quiet and cautious and not immediately caving and smoothing things over and this was unexpected and unsettling.
Her nose twitched as Caroline seemed to come out of whatever trance she had been in and dismissed the discussion and Amelia simply nodded. She moved back over to the other couch, curling her legs under her as she picked up the remote and pulled up the streaming services. "What do you want to watch?" she asked, even though she could already tell it was going to be handed to her to choose. A knot tightened in her stomach, this did not feel good at all.
It was very obvious to anyone that the mood in the room had taken a turn but Caroline needed time to think. This wasn't how the evening was supposed to have gone but she couldn't keep going in this relationship where Amelia constantly made her feel like less that important or poor. She had brushed it off so many times and maybe it was having been home and seeing how happy her sister was with her boyfriend or being around old friends in their relationships that had got to her, perhaps it was truly just hearing yet another throw away, dismissive remark from Amelia that stung but something had changed.
She looked over, blinking rapidly at the question. "You can choose," she muttered as she took another drink and moved so she was lying down on the couch. Amelia had chosen to move over to the other sofa so she might as well get comfy.
Amelia's movements froze and she watched cautiously, her eyes tracking the paramedic's actions. At the prompt she slid off their lap but sat next to Caroline on the couch, a small rebellion that showed she was not going to immediately scurry away when she was told. Her eyes narrowed and she opened and closed her mouth a few times as she tried to find the right words. "I'm not trying to fix....I'm don't expect sex to...." Finally she sighed, "What am I even supposed to be fixing? You've been away for a few days, I'm excited to see you and you got me a great gift. I don't understand where the problem is."
Caroline sighed, her shoulders slumping at the question. This was always where they ran into problems, Amelia dismissing everything like a slight inconvience and her feeling inadequate for reasons she couldn't even identify. She ran a hand over her face as she leaned back against the cushion, words running through her head but no real sentences forming. The silence ticked by but for once she wasn't rushing to end it.
Finally she shook her head and reached for her beer, taking a drink slowly though she was very aware of her girlfriend watching her every move. "There's nothing needs fixed," she said flatly, defeat evident in every muscle. "Let's just watch a movie and relax."
Amelia saw the change in Caroline's body language, heard the roughness in her voice and she sighed dramatically. "I didn't say you gave me a fake purse, I said my mom thought it was beautiful." Realising that she might need a little more persuasion to fix this she put down her glass and moved over to the couch where Caroline was sitting.
Sliding in next to her she turned herself towards the paramedic, her fingers reaching out to brush her cheek, "It is a gorgeous present." She knelt up, turning herself more into Caroline as she leaned in to press soft kisses across her cheeks and lips. "I love my present and you know, now that I am closer to this sweater I think I am really in love with it too....especially when you take it off so that I can keep you warm enough without it."
Caroline leaned in to the kisses for a moment but something about Amelia's words still stung, tension loitering in the air like an unwanted chill. She leaned back, turning away from their touch. "Don't," Caroline muttered before looking back at her girlfriend. The weight of the manager straddling her thighs made it hard to think, leaning in and letting the movement continue would be so much easier but this was what always happened. She pushed lightly at Amelia to encourage her to move off her. "Not everything can be fixed with sex Ame," she explained coldly.
Amelia pursed her lips and sighed heavily at Caroline's reply. "It's not that it needs to be designer or anything," she began as she reached forward to pick up her glass for Caroline to fill. "But come on, a little style would help. It's practically leaving a trail of fluff behind you."
She sipped her wine, her face lighting up at the question, a slight eye roll at the cutted remark first though. "I had a lovely time at home thank you. Everyone said how beautiful I looked and my boots were very much admired. Oh and Mom adored the purse you gave me so it's a good thing you didn't get the knock off like you were threatening to."
"Well I'll be easy to find then," Caroline quipped back at the continuing jabs about her fluffy sweater. Her lip quivered at the edge as she said it, the petty little part of her delighting in annoying her girlfriend this much with the garment. She had suspected this would be the manager's reaction when she unwrapped it on Christmas morning but actually seeing the brunette get irritated was amusing.
She laid her head back on the couch pillow as she drank her beer and listened to Amelia rattle on about her trip home. Her eyes narrowed though at the jibe about the purse. "As if I would dare to give you a fake," she practically growled. That comment had been a step too far for her and she could tell be Amelia's face that they realised it.
