How did Damon and Alaric climb over their mountain of baggage and finally get together?

           Ay caramba, that’s a good question. The short answer is, ‘they haven’t, yet’. The medium answer is that, sometimes, feelings and need are so strong that they’ll plow right through your baggage like the Kool-Aid Man through your mom’s kitchen wall on a hot, summer day.

The long answer is that they’re working on it. They’re both so loaded up with baggage that it causes a meltdown every other second, but they also love each other and it’s strong enough to deal with some of that.

                    Damon’s a child, really. He’s pissy and prissy, he makes fun of you and kicks his feet when he doesn’t want to do something but the real problem is that you have to love him very hard before he can feel it. He’s a child of abuse and neglect, he’s played second fiddle and ‘bad brother’ to Stefan for over a century and he flat out doesn’t know how to be around people because he can have whatever he wants, thanks to his vampire eyeballs so he doesn’t trust affection and he doesn’t feel the need to walk the line. He needs constant attention, for his head to constantly be pet and constant reassurance but he also needs boundaries.

         A problem with his relationship with Elena is that she failed to set him firm, non-negotiable boundaries and let him off the hook for horrible things. This is not anti-Delena on any level, I’m a big Elena lover and will put up my dukes and fight you over her pure af heart, but there are just some things that are canonly true.

                   One of those things is that Ric has done more to humanize and socialize Damon to the human world around him than anyone else has. He was able to get through to Damon when his own brother couldn’t, he provided a solid, steady friendship and a smack on the ass when Damon acted like a shit. He, also, forgave things he shouldn’t have but he did expect more from Damon and Damon, to an extent, delivered.

         At the moment, in the verses where Damon and Ric are together, it’s an on-going process. They’re still learning to be honest, learning to trust and learning more about their partner as time goes by. It’s not perfect, no ship with Damon will ever not have a fuckton of pitfalls, but it’s a process. We have to be honest about these two, the very idea that either Damon Salvatore or Alaric Saltzman is highly shippable is absolute nonsense. Not in a healthy, long-term way, at least. This is something they have to work on every day, and it’s still never going to be a romance novel or a romcom. And Damon’s pretty straight, so there’s that. Love is love, though, right? Even if one guy is a mild-mannered teacher and the other guy is a murderous fiend - which Damon is. Look at his outfit.

           Damon just wants to be important to people. There's this episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show where Rob Petrie comes home and gives his son a rock he found when he was out. His son exclaims, "Oh boy, a rock!" and runs off with it --- and Rob tells Laura that Richie didn’t care what Rob might bring him, he just wanted to know his father was thinking about him when he was out.

That's very, very Damon (and Faith, eep). He doesn't care what kind of attention you give him, so long as you give him your attention and that's turned out badly for everyone in the past. Canon Ric gave him boundaries, expected him to do better and I completely believe that Alaric being Damons friend is what socialized him enough that someone like Elena could see herself with him. 

                     He just wants you to notice when he's not around, because you're so fucking special... and he's a creep.

What's your second choice for Damon if not Alaric?

                              Ooh, well. I don’t really have a major second ship for Damon. He’s not super shippable, because casual sex doesn’t count as a ‘ship’, in my book. I think, with the exception of rp things, that Ric is really it for Damon. The dynamic is too good, the relationship’s a catastrophe, you really don’t get much better than that.

          That being said, I do ship Ric with Faith Lehane (BtVS), but that is for selfish purposes and she’s basically Girl!Damon, anyway.
