Without further ado, introducing: Olivia A. Reyes
Grew up incredibly religious. A fear of God that gave her childhood anxiety and confessing to things children shouldn't worry about such as hearing men curse, or thinking mean thoughts. Though she, to this day, adores her parents.
Daddy was a priest, and her mother a devoted wife, there was really no other way Olivia's life was pictured other than following in her parents foot steps. But she grew up to be precocious. A sense of adventure and wonder plagued her and she often prayed for peace from the thoughts that there was more out there.
Her adolescence was a blur of choir practice and ballet practice and her fathers looming presence in all those things. A vivid memory of him arguing with her ballet instructor about the too short tutu for her performance haunts her memories. But she loved him and wanted to make him proud. Besides, he was just doing what he knew.
An ominous presence often filled the Reyes household. Whether it was the patriarch or God, Olivia was never sure. She just put her head down as she was told and watched her brother go from football stars with scholarships out of the state to priesthood. She watched the light fade from their eyes as duty weighed out their own dreams. She prayed for solace, or for them to find a light again. It never came.
Eventually, she married her own football star, though he didn't want to join the church, not like that. He was a respectable boy from a respectable family that took Olivia away from Jasper and into Houston where it felt like they could both breathe. She went to community college and was able to take dance more seriously and he decided to study social work. Both of their eyes opened to a world outside of the church. It was scary. It was exhilarating.
While they both found a sense of love and admiration for each other during this growth, they also realized they married out of duty. Out of obligation. Divorce didn't seem like an option, so they made a pact to at least stick it out together and be supports until God would give them an answer.
After a long chain of shows and auditions and job offers, Olivia got a big break: Broadway. It was scary. It was an opportunity she always prayed for, but who was she without Andrew? Who was she without fulfilling obligation? In the end, it was Andrew who encourage her, and it was him who set them both free.
Olivia realized God wasn't with them. He wasn't with her during her childhood, he wasn't there to save her mother from her fathers abuse, and he wasn't there when they needed guidance the most. So instead, with Andrews blessing, her mothers support, and her own new found strength, she signed the papers and left for New York City.
Though the lights of Broadway faded quickly, she found herself in Burlesque after an obscure audition, and what's more? She found she loved it. It's a rush. It's the forbidden fruit and a world she'd been long sheltered from. Olivia still blushes at the other women's routines, and giggles at the idea of wearing pasties and nothing else, but the freedom of expression brings her joy.
She still has auditions and lands steady roles, and also teaches yoga, youth ballet, and recently started teaching youth company. Olivia still finds the big city scary, and does her best to not judge others, but some habits are hard to break, and on her worst days, she finds herself in church, seeking comfort.
