Charles Smith was born to an African American father and an Indigenous mother. He grew up with them both in his mothers tribe, until the Army drove them all away. The family moved around for a while until soldiers captured his mother, never to be seen again. Without his wife, Charles father drank himself into a depression and was forever a changed man. So at 13, Charles ran away and had been on his own ever since. He spent many years alone, aimless in life, just surviving. Until he won the favor of the members of the Van der Linde gang. They recognized Charles skills and calm demeanor - making him a invaluable member of the gang.
