“Otacon...” Snake’s voice is low and soft, as it always seems to become whenever he is interacting with the engineer. “Bravery isn’t what you do, it’s ... doing it anyway, despite the fear.” He pauses, grunting in that way he does when he’s considering a profound question. “Fear keeps us alive, it reminds us we are alive. I’m... not a real person, but when I’m with you, I feel like I could be... I love you.”

Snake, when did you and Otacon get married?

“Hrrn... after Shadow Moses, we started working together, as Philanthropy. Metal Gear was no longer a secret, not just a single government’s pet project... not sure it ever was. The Patriots had designs for it from the start—they had designs for us, for me… I…” Snake shakes his head. “He asked me one night, after we...” His deep, sea green eyes jump to one side as he considers how best to continue, or if he should. 

“We moved the equipment into a small apartment, made it our… temporary base. I don’t know the exact date,” he lies, “but I can’t forget what he said.” A mischievous smile plays across too-wide lips and a handsome face. “But that’s classified. You’re gunna need higher clearance, kid. There’s a keycard a few rooms down, past the storage area; a guard has it. You’ll know which one. Good luck.”

Grooming, brushing, or tending to their hair //Hhhhh you’ve got it~

It is not downtime, so much as a pause, the intake of breath between hoarse, sometimes bloody exhalations. Snake is going over the blueprints of a new Metal Gear. The organization which owns these incidious things has already begun to produce them regularly and deactivation is up close and personal. It is not his ideal, but Philanthropy rarely has the option. As he sits on the ottoman near the sofa of their newest rental—this one is a bit less rat-infested than the last—he feels, suddenly, hands upon the sides of his head, fingers curling into his thick, brunet hair, and nails softly scraping along his scalp.

“Hnn… Otacon,” he murmurs, grip upon the schematics slipping ever-so-subtly, shoulders sagging with relief of tension. His hand rises to stop the action, but Snake cannot complete it. Those fingers on his scalp feel too damn good.

“Hnn.. yeah,” Snake responds, nodding. It is logical that they would be. They have seen and been through so much together. There is little which is not known to them about the other person. There is history between them, and chemistry as an added bonus... and there is trust, deep, abiding trust. He thinks the world of Otacon and the engineer adores him. If Snake believed in destiny, he might convince himself that he was not worthy of this life and love, but he and his stalwart companion have long since given destiny the slip.

Snake, you’re looking healthier and somehow… Happier, these days. What flipped the switch? You’ve always been on your own.

“Hnn... that's the difference,” Snake responds, his usual, raspy tone somewhat lighter than normal. “I’m not alone.”

His gaze alights on Otacon's back, hunched over the keyboard of a laptop. Their environs are not comfortable, but they have made it functional and, with each other, cozy. It's temporary, in any case and they both bring home wherever they go in the form of the other man.

Snake, you once said you were raised by many. What did you mean then?

“It’s a fundamental human truth,” grunts the mercenary, green eyes downcast a moment, looking down at hands which have gripped a firearm more often than human flesh, violence more than affection, death more than life. It is his lot. He is a project, a pet which has turned on its master with great impact, “that no one is raised by one or two… no… it’s always many—someone like me… I can see it more clearly, because I didn’t have the focus of just the two.”

He looks up presently, to Otacon, who is beaming. “It takes a village,” Snake adds.

Snake, what will you do when Otacon joins the great Miku Hatsune concert in the sky?

Snake knows the odds Otacon will die before he does are very slim, so he’s never considered it. His instinct would initially be to give up, to hope he might follow soon after, but that’s the romantic in him and not the pragmatic mercenary he knows Otacon loves.

“Hhrn… I don’t have a choice,” he says, pursing his lips, “I have to keep fighting. It’s what I’m built to do, but more than that, it’s what he’d want to see. If I give up...hhh...” Solid Snake trails off, shaking his head, as if it doesn’t bear consideration, not really. He is not intimating that the world would fall apart, that everything would stop, that the sky would fall and mourn his loss... but he would mourn Otacon’s. For Snake, his world would be over, he would be on autopilot.

But a super soldier on autopilot is still a force with which to be reckoned and if that is the way to honor his friend’s memory, then so be it.
