Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, advocacy and partnerships with local health care organizations. For three weeks, the Orbis DC10 sits on the runway at Yangon Airport, and each day five patients will have been treated for cataracts, glaucoma, and some will even receive cornea transplants. For a period prior to the arrival of the plane, local doctors will be screening a wide range of people to be examined by the plane's doctors, who will then make the final decision on who will be operated upon. Those chosen are selected on the basis of the value that the procedure will have in training local doctors in techniques that will be of benefit to them, as well as  being of clinical advantage to the patients. All patients selected will be poor.
