Geek B-Roll: Lost Interviews - Absent Minds Nov. 16 2014
Guest Host Rocco Galloway interviews Absent Minds about the history and style of the band. Also Pizza Shoe Records.
I mentioned this thing to elspethsunschampion earlier today, but here’s an elaboration:
I love how much today’s Uncharted Realms is like a guilty-pleasure YA novel. I have wonderfully fond memories of reading stuff like H.I.V.E., and this story was a nostalgia-trip for those types of books in the very best way.
“VRYN. A world of industrialized magic, slums, and stalemates. Factions battle for control of the CORE STATES, powered by endless trails of MAGE-RINGS.
Meet JACE BELEREN, lonely outcast and TELEPATHIC PRODIGY. He receives a rare opportunity to learn more about his powers and his world, but his mentor may have other things in mind. And Jace might have secrets of his own...”
If you found a book with this summary at a Barnes and Noble in 2010, would you be remotely surprised?
Absent Minds Spoilers
One of the things that most interested me about Jace’s Origin story here is how they tried to make Jace as archetypally Blue as possible. Obviously there’s the whole “mind magic” and “learning” thing, which I don’t think anybody needed me to point out, but what I really latched onto is how willing Jace was to manipulate his own mind as a resource. Somebody who was Green or Red would probably be very scared of messing with your own thoughts like that. I don’t think your archetypal Red character would want to mess with its thoughts, and therefore emotions, artificially. Green, meanwhile, believes that the natural order of your body and mind are sacred, and that deleting or modifying your own memories is bad for the natural order of things.
When Jace was continually deleting his own memories for some incremental advantage over Alhammaret, it struck me as a somewhat transhumanist action. Jace is willing to completely change his own thoughts. He didn’t care about preserving a “self” like I think Red/Green would, he merely used all the resources available to him.
This ties into various philosophical views on the self, and I think I might write up something about how the different colors would line up, but I would definitely think Jace doesn’t believe in any sort of metaphysical “self” or “soul.” Being able to manipulate your own thoughts is an advantage, so why not use it?
Anyway, this is just the first thing that came to mind.
