With Greater than Games being shuttered for the foreseeable future, I’d like to say a little of how much >G and Sentinels has meant to me. After being introduced to the game in 2013, some friends and I found the Tactics game after it launched and really fell in love with the small-squad 3v3 that we could play together and match wits against other teams. We drove 16 hours overnight for a tournament they hosted in a St Louis board game shop where we qualified for their next tournament by the skin of our teeth and a technicality.
What followed was a wild ride of asking to help playtest, and then develop the next expansion (which we had a blast doing even though it got cancelled); and then pitching them on a slightly more streamlined, more ambitious project that integrated co-op play as well as a way for organized play to have narrative consequences for the future of the setting. This would end up being the most creatively fulfilling three years of my life, and although Prime War was also ultimately cancelled, I wouldn’t have traded that time for anything.
Christopher, Adam, and Paul took a swing on some young guns, and helped cultivate our creative chops both in game design and writing. I know things are rough on the ground now, but I wish the best for all of the folks that worked at one of the coolest game companies I know!
