Second Treatise of Government EP 12 Political Society and Monarchy
I'm helping @sayla_aris with the pattern for her Liselotte gown, and the late 17th century armscye is messing with my head. The piece in the middle of this image is the side-back of the bodice. The inner strength layer has boning channels-- that's cool. No need for stays, the bodice is the stays. But then the outer layer of the gown is more than 3 inches lower at the armscye than the guts layer. Why? Why is it like this? How is the sleeve attached? Court gowns appear to have been cut so that the whole thing looked poised to slide down the wearer's arms at any moment, and supposedly Louis XIV had them designed that way because he had a shoulder kink. What the absolute monarchy. #17thcentury #courtdress #versailles #absolutemonarchy #clothinghistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Q0uPOgaoA/?igshid=7ttf18yaujib
