@absoluterumpage , “hell year” is what some of my husband’s relatives call “the terrible twos” in regard to parenting: from 1 and a half to two and a half, a toddler is learning about how stuff works around them, and how they can impact the world through their actions. “Toddler schemas” is the phrase to chuck on to the search engine of your choice for neat and more thoroughly informative articles.
So! To further answer your question: due to the fact that toddlers are finally able to have a small amount of autonomy (e.g., they can walk! And make noise that gets more interesting responses! And pick things up! And affect their world more thoroughly!) they start experimenting with free will, such as what kiddo did today: kiddo has decided that yogurt is gross and not worth eating, when before now it was a guaranteed favorite. What happens when my kid does not like/want something? It deserves an imperious, gentle backhand away, of course! Which sent the yogurt all over kiddo and the high chair tray (and a bit on me, as well). This has basically been going on for the past week, and is a perfectly normal part of a child’s development.
It’s also frustrating, as a parent, to experience your kid rejecting formerly-favorite foods, and being more interested in throwing food around as a physics experiment instead of, y’know, eating it... and then eating it off the floor an hour later (not the yogurt, though, obviously; that was cleaned up immediately).
